THE HAMLETS SURROUNDING CASTELNOVO NE’ MONTI: HISTORY, TRADITIONS AND TRUE BEAUTY
The villages of Castelnovo ne' Monti and Felina, in the province of Reggio Emilia, enchant visitors with their beauty and historical charm.
Castelnuovo ne’ Monti is a place that jealously preserves its history and traditions, offering visitors the opportunity to explore numerous ancient villages.
Monte Castello
One of the most well-known villages is Monte Castello. Of this ancient construction, parts of the outer walls and a portion of the tower remain, which rises a few metreqs above the surrounding terrain. Archaeological excavations conducted between 2009 and 2011 revealed the surrounding walls and two watchtowers, one of which is circular in shape. In 2022, a restoration project made the area accessible to the public, highlighting the tower with two visible floors, the outer walls, and a cistern.
Pieve di Campiliola (de Bismantova)
Also known as "de Bismantova", the Pieve di Campiliola was one of the largest and most important churches in the Diocese of Reggio Emilia. Dating back to the year 980, it received numerous donations in the early centuries of the second millennium, forming a rich heritage. Although of Romanesque origin, it was modified in the 17th century according to the tastes of the period. Even today, one can admire its traditionall architectural features.
Pietradura
Pietradura is a rural complex of ancient buildings of great historical importance in the local area. Unchanged until today, the complex includes two tower houses, an oratory, and a rural building, all surrounded by a wall. The tallest tower features a gabled roof with a unique ceiling, while the second tower house has a large floor and a four-sloped roof. Near this tower, there are other buildings with a large fireplace. The area is organized around a central courtyard with a spacious paved area.
La Pietra
La Pietra is a huge rock formation visibile for hundreds of kilometres. It’s a place steeped in spirituality and history. Where there were encampments or military fortresses on its peak, there were also places of worship. At the foot of the rock is a hermitage that, over the centuries, has been repaired, damaged, and renewed. The last time it was restored, was a few years ago, after a rockfall, and it was reopened in July 2021.
Felina, on the other hand, stands on a hill that allows you to immerse yourself in the breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, offering visitors an atmosphere of calmness and serenity. This ancient village is famous for its Rocca di Felina (or Salame di Felina), a fortress dating back to the 12th century which dominates the Tresinaro valley. The reason for its destruction is not yet fully known, but it was probably destroyed by a raid or used as a stone quarry after its decline. The fortress represents a tangible symbol of the history of the town and is an unmissable stop for anyone visiting the village. Furthermore, in summer, a couple of days' celebration takes place where you can eat and listen to live music.
These oases of peace far from the hustle and bustle of modern life tell a thousand-year-old story where time seems to have stopped. They are hidden gems in the heart of northern Italy, ready to be discovered and admired by anyone who wishes to live an authentic and unforgettable experience.

I borghi di Castelnovo ne’ Monti e Felina, nella provincia di Reggio Emilia, incantano i visitatori con la loro bellezza e il loro fascino storico.
Castelnovo ne’ Monti è un luogo che conserva gelosamente la sua storia e le sue tradizioni, offrendo ai visitatori la possibilità di esplorare numerosi borghi antichi.
Monte Castello
Uno dei borghi più noti è Monte Castello. Di questa antica costruzione, rimangono parti delle mura esterne e una porzione della torre, che si eleva di alcuni metri rispetto al terreno circostante. Gli scavi archeologici condotti tra il 2009 e il 2011 hanno rivelato le mura di cinta e due torri di vedetta, una delle quali ha forma circolare. Nel 2022, un progetto di restauro ha reso l’area accessibile al pubblico, mettendo in evidenza la torre con due piani visibili, le mura esterne e una cisterna.
Pieve di Campiliola (de Bismantova)
Conosciuta anche come “de Bismantova”, la Pieve di Campiliola è stata una delle chiese più grandi e importanti nella Diocesi di Reggio Emilia. Risalente all’anno 980, ha ricevuto numerose donazioni nei primi secoli del secondo millennio, formando un ricco patrimonio. Pur essendo di origine romanica, fu modificata nel XVII secolo secondo i gusti del periodo. Ancora oggi si possono ammirare i suoi tratti architettonici tipici.
Pietradura
Pietradura è un complesso rurale di grande importanza storica e paesaggistica nel territorio comunale. Rimasto invariato fino ad oggi, il complesso include due case a torre, un oratorio e un edificio rurale, tutti circondati da un muro. La torre più alta presenta un tetto a due falde e un particolare soffitto, mentre la seconda casa a torre ha un grande piano e un tetto a quattro falde. Vicino a questa torre si trovano altri edifici con un grande camino. L’area è organizzata intorno a una corte centrale con un ampio spazio pavimentato.
La Pietra
La Pietra è un luogo intriso di spiritualità. Dove c’erano accampamenti o fortezze militari sulla sua cima, c’erano anche luoghi di culto. Ai piedi della roccia si trova un eremo che nel corso dei secoli è stato riparato, danneggiato e rinnovato. L’ultima volta è stato restaurato pochi anni fa, dopo una frana, e è stato riaperto nel luglio 2021.
Felina, invece, sorge su un’altura che permette di immergersi nei panorami mozzafiato delle colline circostanti, offrendo ai visitatori un’atmosfera di tranquillità e serenità. Questo antico borgo è celebre per la sua Rocca di Felina (o Salame di Felina), una fortezza risalente al XII secolo che domina la valle del Tresinaro. La ragione della sua distruzione non è ancora del tutto nota, ma probabilmente fu distrutta da una razzia o utilizzata come cava di pietra dopo la sua decadenza. La Rocca rappresenta un simbolo tangibile della storia del paese e costituisce una tappa imperdibile per chiunque visiti il borgo. Inoltre, in estate, vi si svolge una festa di un paio di giorni dove è possibile mangiare e ascoltare musica live.
Queste oasi di pace lontane dal trambusto della vita moderna raccontano una storia millenaria dove il tempo sembra essersi fermato. Sono delle gemme nascoste nel cuore dell’Italia settentrionale, pronte ad essere scoperte e ammirate da chiunque desideri vivere un’esperienza autentica e indimenticabile.
