What are the “Big Benches”?
The Big Bench is a project developed by the American couple Chris and Catherine Bangle. As the name clearly describes, they are simple benches built on a huge scale (about four times the size of a normal bench) which are situated in a beautiful viewpoint somewhere in the countryside.
The Big Bench is now an attraction all over the world and they aim to support the local community, tourism and the local artisan. The Big Benches are positioned in a place with a beautiful view. There are now 329 benches in the world while another 42 are under construction.
The origins:
Chris Bangle, an American designer who moved with his family to Piedmont, made the first Big Bench in Italy in 2010. Chris created this project to make us feel like children looking at the landscape with completely new eyes and perspective. The idea of creating a bench and not maybe a chair is to make us sit with others, perhaps even strangers to meet new people. This idea has spread all over Italy where there are approximately 270 Big Benches of all colours.
The Big Bench of Ligonchio
The Big Bench of Ligonchio is number 86 and it is pink. The bench is made with pink planks. The nearby nature trail goes into a pine forest and ends in a big field; you can also go by mountain-bike or e-bike. When you arrive at the bench, you can see Pietra di Bismantova, Schiocchi dell’ozola and some villages.
The Big Bench of Felina
The Big Bench of Felina is on Mount Fosola. It was created on 1 September 2018 and it is red.
To get there you have to take a walk through a forest where there are many red signs to find the correct route.
In addition to the bench, there are many other attractions like small houses and sculptures like mushrooms and birds made of wood.
There is also a box of wood where people can leave a comment or a thought about what they felt on the bench.
The view is magnificent; in front of us, there are Mount Ventasso, the Pietra di Bismantova, Mount Cimone and Cerreto.
The Big Bench of Costa
The Big Bench of Costa is pink and it’s on Mount Ca’ di Viola between Castelnovo and Ventasso. You can go there by three different routes: Costa de Grassi, Frassinedolo and Baita d’Oro restaurant. The view is incredible, with Pietra di Bismantova in the centre seen from above. Near this Big Bench, there is also another little bench, also pink.
Here too, you have to take a walk of about 40 minutes to get there following pink signs.
The Big Bench of Baiso
The Big Bench of Baiso is number 93 and it is orange. The bench is made of orange planks. The trail is about 30 minutes and during that, there is a placement of land art. When you arrive at the bench you can see “calanchi” and Monte Cusna.
There is also a Big Bench community where you can find the official merchandising where you can buy all kinds of gadgets like keychains, t-shirts and sweatshirts. There is also a special passport for those who visit the big benches; above it will be the name of the town where the bench is located. It is a perfect souvenir or memory.

Cosa sono le “Big Benches”?
Le Big Bench sono un progetto sviluppato dalla coppia americana formata da Chris e Catherine Bangle. Come dice il nome le Big Bench sono semplici panchine ma realizzate su scala più ampia (circa 4 volte la dimensione di una panchina normale) situate nel territorio in punti con una vista mozzafiato.
Oggi le Big Bench sono un'attrazione in tutto il mondo e mirano ad aiutare il turismo, il commercio e gli artigiani locali. Le Big Benches sono posizionate in luoghi con un'ottima vista. Oggi ci sono 329 panchine nel mondo mentre 42 sono in costruzione.
The origins:
La prima Big Bench in Italia è stata posizionata nel 2010 da Chris Bangle, un designer americano trasferitosi in Piemonte con la sua famiglia. Lo scopo del progetto di Chris è quello di farci sentire bambini mentre guardiamo il panorama con occhi nuovi. L’ idea di creare una panchina e non una sedia è dovuta al fatto che lo scopo delle Big Bench è quello di farci sedere con altre persone, talvolta sconosciuti e farci conoscere nuove persone. Questa idea ha avuto grande riscontro in Italia dove ci sono, approssimativamente, 270 Big Benches di tutti i colori.
La Big Bench di Ligonchio
La Big Bench di Ligonchio è la numero 86 ed è rosa. La panchina è fatta con assi rosa. Il sentiero che porta alla panchina attraversa una pineta e termina in un grande prato; lo si può fare, oltre che a piedi, con una mountain-bike o con una e-bike. Una volta arrivati alla panchina si vedono: la Pietra di Bismantova, gli Schiocchi dell’ Ozola e alcuni paesi della zona.
La Big Bench di Felina
La Big Bench di Felina è situata sul Fosola, è rossa ed è stata "inaugurata" il 1 settembre 2018. Per arrivarci si segue una passeggiata nella foresta dove sono presenti frecce rosse per seguire la via corretta. Oltre alla panchina sono presenti altre attrazioni come piccole case e sculture di funghi e uccelli fatti di legno.Inoltre è presente una scatola di legno dove le persone possono lasciare un commento o scrivere cosa hanno provato quando sono saliti sulla panchina. La vista è magnifica, di fronte a noi troviamo: il Ventasso, la Pietra di Bismantova, il Cimone e il monte La Nuda (Cerreto).
La Big Bench di Costa de’ Grassi
La Big Bench di Costa è rosa ed è situata sul monte Ca’ di Viola tra Castelnovo e il Ventasso. Per arrivarci si possono seguire tre differenti percorsi: la prima partendo da Costa de Grassi, la seconda da Frassinedolo e la terza passando dalla Baita d’Oro. Il panorama anche qua è magnifico, si può vedere la Pietra di Bismantova come rialzata rispetto alla valle circostante. Di fianco alla Big Bench principale c’è una panchina più piccola sempre rosa. Per arrivare alla Big Bench si fa una camminata di circa 40 minuti seguendo delle frecce rosa.
La Big Bench di Baiso
La Big Bench di Baiso è la numero 93 ed è arancione.La panchina è realizzata con assi di legno arancioni. La camminata per arrivarci è di circa 30 minuti e lungo il tracciato sono presenti installazioni di land art. Una volta giunti alla Big Bench si possono vedere i Calanchi e il Monte Cusna. Il progetto comunitario delle Big Bench ha un sito dove si può trovare tutto il merchandising composto da: gadgets, portachiavi, t-shirt e felpe.
Oltre al merchandising è stato creato un passaporto per chi visita le Big Bench dove vengono scritti i nomi delle città dove sono situate quest’ ultime. Un perfetto ricordo.
