From the beginning of the pandemic, doctors, nurses and hospital staff have always been on the front line to fight the virus and to help victims. Risking their own lives and well-being, they have worked day in day out with never-ending and draining shifts in order to save the lives of other human beings. There is no doubt that they are the real heroes of this pandemic and Banksy wanted to thank all of them with this artwork.
On 6 May 2020 Bansky, the UK’s most famous street artist, paid tribute to doctors and nurses on the frontline against coronavirus with a new work: Game changer.
The black and white painting, which covers one square metre, shows a child kneeling by a wastepaper basket dressed in dungarees and a T-shirt. He has abandoned his Spiderman and Batman model figures in favour of a new favourite superhero: a nurse. Her arm is outstretched and pointing forward in the classic Superman posture on a mission. She wears a facemask, a nurse’s cape and a white uniform with the Red Cross emblem, which is the only element of colour in the entire picture. To further underline the sense of gratitude and trust towards all health workers and their hard work Banksy left a note with the painting, which reads: “Thanks for all you're doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white.” As for the location, the painting was initially exhibited in a room near the emergency department in Southampton hospital, in the UK, known to be particularly affected by coronavirus during the first wave in 2020. Recently, with the artist’s consent, the work was sold at an auction in order to help the NHS (National Health Service).
Although a “thank you” will never be enough, all of us must be grateful to these people for their incessant work and their dedication to save lives. We have to back up the heroic contribution they have given in all possible ways, just like Banksy did. “Game Changer” not only thanks the hospital workers, but gives hope to the entire human race in a dark time, encouraging us to regain solidarity and faith.

Sin dall’inizio della pandemia, dottori, infermieri e staff ospedaliero sono sempre stati in prima linea per combattere il virus e aiutare le vittime. Rischiando la propria vita e salute, hanno lavorato giorno dopo giorno con turni infiniti ed estenuanti al fine di salvare le vite di altri esseri umani. Non c’è dubbio che siano i veri eroi di questa pandemia e Banksy ha voluto ringraziare tutti loro con questa opera d’arte.
Il 6 maggio 2020 Banksy, lo street artist più famoso del Regno Unito, rese omaggio ai medici e agli infermieri in prima linea contro il coronavirus con una nuova opera: Game Changer
L’opera in bianco e nero, dalle dimensioni di un metro quadro, mostra un bambino inginocchiato accanto ad un cestino vesito con maglietta e salopette. Ha abbandonato i suoi modellini di Spiderman e Batman in favore di un nuovo supereroe preferito: un’infermiera il cui braccio è teso e rivolto in avanti nella classica postura di Spiderman in missione. Indossa una maschera, un mantello da infermiera e un'uniforme bianca con lo stemma della Croce Rossa, unico elemento di colore in tutta l’immagine. A sottolineare ulteriormente il senso di riconoscenza e fiducia nei confronti di tutti gli operatori sanitari e del loro duro lavoro, Banksy accompagna l’opera con un biglietto che dice: “Grazie per quello che voi tutti fate. Spero che questo illumini un po’ il posto, anche se solo in bianco e nero”. Per quanto riguarda l'ubicazione, l’opera, inizialmente esposta in una sala vicino al reparto di emergenza nell’ospedale di Southampton (particolarmente colpito dal virus) nel Regno Unito, è stata recentemente venduta all’asta con il consenso dell’artista e il ricavato è stato devoluto al NHS (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale).
Sebbene un grazie non sarà mai abbastanza, tutti noi dovremmo essere grati a queste persone per il loro incessante lavoro e per la loro dedizione nel salvare vite. Dobbiamo sostenere il contributo eroico che hanno dato con tutti i mezzi che abbiamo, proprio come Banksy ha fatto. “Game Changer” non solo ringrazia i lavoratori ospedalieri, ma dona speranza a tutto il genere umano in un periodo buio, incoraggiandoci a recuperare solidarietà e fiducia.
