FRIDA KAHLO AND DIEGO RIVERA: A TOXIC RELATIONSHIP.
Frida Kahlo is probably one of the most celebrated and famous female painters ever. As an artist she was in a class of her own. She was extraordinary because she was able to convey deep emotions, such as pain, through her paintings. Even as a woman she was quite modern and independent, as a teenager she even practised sports that a woman was not meant to practise at the time, such as wrestling.
However, throughout her life her achievements were constantly overshadowed by those of her husband, the famous muralist Diego Rivera. In fact, she was often mentioned or referred to as Rivera’s wife and not as Frida Kahlo. They had an unstable relationship and there are also quite a few assumptions that Rivera used to abuse her and cheat on her.
When they first met she was fifteen years old and he was more than twenty years older. He was already an affirmed artist and was considered a prestigious man and that’s probably why she was attracted to him. And maybe she didn't realize she was about to be stuck in a relationship that was emotionally abusive. But before judging her submission to her husband, we need to take into account Kahlo’s story.
Kahlo had poor health in her childhood, she contracted polio, which caused her right leg to grow thinner than her left one. Moreover, she was involved in a bus accident and her back and pelvis were fractured. In spite of all the pain she went through, she always showed a lot of self confidence, which to me was a way of hiding her fragility.
All things considered, I think Frida Kahlo was deeply affected
by her accident and felt inferior to her husband because she was in constant pain and unable to have children. Moreover, she was younger and therefore more vulnerable.
MARGARET KEANE
Margaret Keane is an American painter born in 1927 known for her suggestive paintings portraying women and children with big, sad and disproportionate eyes. Her story, though, is much sadder and problematic than it might seem.
Margaret and her husband Walter met in 1955: she was fascinated by his charm and the two of them were very happy and got married, but then things went sideways: one day Margaret discovered that he was selling her paintings in a famous club in San Francisco and was taking all the credits.
When she confronted him she was furious, but he manipulated her into thinking that they needed the money and that people were more likely to buy those paintings from him rather than from her. Convinced by his lies and scared by his threats, she worked for years 16 hours a day, locked in the attic with the curtains closed. He was very jealous and abusive: he wouldn’t allow her to have any friends and he even threatened to beat her.
After ten years of marriage they divorced and, in 1970, Margaret told the whole story to a radio station and then proceeded to sue her husband. During the trial, the judge challenged them both to paint a child with big eyes in front of the court: Walter found a pathetic excuse, whereas Margaret painted it in 53 minutes and won the court case.
For Margaret that painting is symbolic of her triumph over her husband’s lies: after years of living under his shadow she finally got the recognition she deserved and it’s an example for all those talented women who are forced to live in silence due to a still strongly misogynistic society.

FRIDA KAHLO
Frida Kahlo è probabilmente una delle pittrici più famose e celebrate della storia. Come artista fu una fuori classe. Fu straordinaria perché fu in grado di trasmettere profonde emozioni, come la sofferenza, attraverso i suoi dipinti. Anche come donna fu piuttosto indipendente e moderna, da giovane praticava anche sport che una donna all’epoca non avrebbe dovuto praticare, come il wrestling.
Tuttavia durante la sua vita i suoi successi vennero costantemente messi in ombra da quelli di suo marito, il famoso muralista Diego Rivera. Infatti, veniva spesso menzionata o si faceva riferimento a lei come “moglie di Rivera” e non come Frida Kahlo. I due ebbero una relazione instabile e si suppone che lui l’abbia anche maltrattata e tradita.
Quando si incontrarono per la prima volta lei aveva quindici anni e lui era di oltre vent’anni più vecchio. Lui era già un artista affermato e veniva considerato un uomo di prestigio ed è forse per questo che lei venne attratta da lui. E forse non si rese conto che stava per essere bloccata in una relazione emotivamente violenta. Ma prima di giudicare la sua sottomissione al marito,dobbiamo tener conto della storia di Kahlo.
Kahlo soffrì di salute fragile durante la sua infanzia, contrasse la polio, che causò il fatto che la gamba destra crebbe più sottile della gamba sinistra. Per di più, venne coinvolta in un incidente d’autobus e la schiena e il bacino vennero fratturati. Nonostante tutto il dolore che dovette affrontare, esibiva sempre molta sicurezza di sé, che a parer mio era un modo per nascondere la propria fragilità.
Tutto considerato, penso che Frida Kahlo venne profondamente influenzata dall'incidente subito in gioventù e si sentiva inferiore a suo marito perché soffriva costantemente e non poteva avere figli. Inoltre era più giovane e quindi più vulnerabile.
MARGARET KEANE
Margaret Keane è una pittrice Americana nata nel 1927 conosciuta per i suoi dipinti suggestivi che ritraggono donne e bambini con occhi grandi, tristi e sproporzionati. La sua storia, tuttavia, è molto più triste e problematica di ciò che può apparentemente sembrare.
Margaret e suo marito Walter si sono conosciuti nel 1955: da subito affascinata da lui, i due si sposarono felicemente, poi però la loro relazione prese una brutta piega: un giorno Margaret scoprì infatti che il marito vendeva i suoi dipinti in un famoso club di San Francisco prendendosi tutti i diritti d’autore.
Quando i due si confrontarono Margaret era furiosa, ma lui la manipolò in modo tale da farle credere che nessuno avrebbe mai comprato i suoi quadri se avessero saputo che erano stati dipinti da lei. Soggiogata dalle sue parole e spaventata dalle sue minacce, lavorò per anni circa 16 ore al giorno, chiusa in soffitta e con le tende sempre chiuse. Lui era incredibilmente geloso e abusivo: non le permetteva di avere amici e minacciava di picchiarla.
Dopo dieci anni di matrimonio i due divorziarono e, nel 1970, Margaret decise di raccontare la sua storia in una stazione radio molto famosa per poi denunciare suo marito. Durante il processo, il giudice sfidò entrambi a dipingere un bambino dagli occhi grandi di fronte alla corte e mentre Walter trovò una scusa patetica per non farlo, Margaret dipinse il quadro in soli 53 minuti e vinse il processo.
Per Margaret quel dipinto è un simbolo del suo trionfo sulle bugie di suo marito: dopo anni passati a vivere nella sua ombra, ha finalmente ottenuto il riconoscimento che meritava ed è un esempio per tutte quelle donne ricche di talento che sono costrette a vivere in silenzio a causa di una società ancora molto maschilista.
