Casina
My hometown is Casina, which is situated in the Apennine Mountains of Emilia Romagna. It is easy to meet it if you come from the city of Reggio Emilia; there are about 4500 people living here and, although it is quite small, I think it has so many things to offer.
First, I’d like to talk about the territory: the town is surrounded by hills and mountains where you can visit castles and churches. For example, the beautiful Castles of Sarzano and Leguigno and the Pieve of Paullo and Pianzo. While you visit these ancient buildings (from the 9 th , 10 th and 14 th century), you can learn about the history of kings, queens and important noble families that lived in
this area.
If you like outdoor activities, you can walk or cycle along many paths in Monte Barazzone and Monte Pulce. These are wonderful places where you can enjoy wildlife and nature.
Secondly, in Casina, you can enjoy many festivals and events that take place all year round; for example, during the summer we have “Moto Raduno” that is a meeting of all people who love riding motorbikes but is open to everybody. There is live music, stands that offer food and drinks and it is a great opportunity to meet new people from all over Italy.
In August, we are proud to organise the Parmigiano Reggiano festival; this is an event to celebrate one of the most important and famous cheese in the world. Here, local dairy farms show their products and demonstrate how Parmesan Cheese is made.
In Autumn, some villages in the municipality of Casina host a Chestnut festival where you can buy and eat typical seasonal products, such as mushrooms, chestnuts and nuts.
In the winter, the town is not very lively because the weather is quite cold and it can snow from November to even March and April; however, in January, there is the Festival of Pork Scratchings.
This is a local delicacy typical of the mountain culinary tradition. This event is a contest where farmers start cooking pork scratchings and compete for the best tasting one.
In Casina and in the nearby area there are many restaurants and bars you can visit to taste typical regional dishes, for example tortelli, cappelletti, lasagne and delicious meat dishes.
We have an open swimming pool that you can use in the summer and a Fitness Centre that is open all year round where you can workout and attend different courses. We also have a football pitch where our team trains regularly.
Finally, a great advantage of living in Casina is the location: you can enjoy living in a beautiful area, surrounded by woods and mountains, but you can also easily reach the bigger town of Castelnovo ne’ Monti which is about 15 km away and the city of Reggio Emilia which is about 30 km down in the valley.

La mia città natale è Casina, che è situata sull’Appennino Emiliano. È facile da raggiungere dalla città di Reggio Emilia; ci sono circa 4500 abitanti e sebbene sia abbastanza piccola, penso che abbia tante cose da offrire.
Prima di tutto, vorrei parlare del territorio: la città è circondata da colline e montagne dove ci sono castelli e chiese da visitare. Per esempio, il bellissimo castello di Sarzano e Leguigno e la Pieve di Paullo e la Pieve di Pianzo. Visitando questi antichi edifici (del nono, decimo e quattordicesimo secolo) si può imparare la storia di re, regine e famiglie nobili famose che vissero in questa zona.
Per chi ama le attività all’aperto, si possono fare passeggiate e giri in bicicletta lungo diversi sentieri sul Monte Barazzone e Monte Pulce. Questi sono luoghi meravigliosi per osservare gli animali e stare in mezzo alla natura.
Inoltre, Casina offre molte feste ed eventi che hanno luogo durante tutto l’anno; per esempio, durante l’estate, abbiamo un “Moto Raduno”, che è un incontro per tutti gli appassionati di moto ma è aperto a tutti. Ci sono musica dal vivo e stand che offrono cibo e bevande ed è una fantastica opportunità per incontrare persone di ogni parte del mondo.
Ad agosto, siamo orgogliosi di organizzare la Festa del Parmigiano Reggiano; questo è un evento che festeggia uno dei formaggi più importanti e famosi del mondo. In questa occasione i caseifici locali mostrano i loro prodotti e danno una dimostrazione di come viene fatto il Parmigiano.
In autunno, alcuni paesi nel comune di Casina, organizzano la Festa della Castagna dove si possono comprare e mangiare prodotti stagionali tipici, come i funghi, le castagne e la frutta secca.
In inverno, la città non è molto animata perché fa freddo ed è possibile che nevichi da novembre ad aprile; tuttavia, a gennaio, c’è la Festa dei Ciccioli. Questi sono una specialità locale, tipica della tradizione culinaria montana. Questa festa è una gara dove i contadini cucinano i ciccioli che vengono poi assaggiati e premiati.
A Casina e nelle zone limitrofe ci sono tanti ristoranti e bar dove si possono assaggiare piatti tipici del territorio, per esempio, tortelli, cappelletti, lasagne e deliziosi piatti a base di carne.
Abbiamo una piscina all’aperto che può essere utilizzata in estate e una palestra che è aperta tutto l’anno dove fare attività fisica e partecipare a diversi corsi. Abbiamo anche un campo da calcio dove la nostra squadra si allena e gioca regolarmente.
Per concludere, un grande punto di forza di Casina è la posizione: abitando qui, si ha la possibilità di vivere in una zona bellissima, circondata da boschi e montagne, ma si possono raggiungere facilmente città più grandi, come Castelnovo, a circa 15 km e Reggio Emilia a circa 30 km.
