This year at the end of September 10 students from Khala, a small village located in the East of Germany, came to Castelnovo and some students from our class and from the 5th class of “Liceo Linguistico” hosted them. Khala was, like other important German cities, part of the former East Germany which was separated from the former west by the Berlin Wall. We are 3 students from the 4th class and we hosted 3 German students. Even if they remained only for a few days, we had the time to get to know each other.
Every day was organized in order to give the German students the opportunity to see as many landmarks as possible, but we also found the time to share our points of view and to discuss about the differences between our countries. On the first day we walked to Pietra di Bismantova and in spite of our tiredness we really enjoyed it. We found it very interesting to see how amazed they were as they first saw the majesty of our Pietra di Bismantova: despite the fog which that day tried to hide it, they still had the possibility to admire our Castelnovo’s most famous landmark. We also had the opportunity to visit the little romanic church up there and we read our friends a scrap of history about that stunning place. In the afternoon some students arranged a trip to a well-known shopping center in Reggio Emilia and we had fun with our friends. They were also able to buy souvenirs and little gifts for their friends in Germany. On the second day we walked to the old castle of Castelnovo but the path was so steep and slippery that we could barely stand! However our effort was worth it because when we reached the castle we could admire the whole village with a breathtaking view. Afterwards we met some Italian and German authorities who explained to us the significance of projects like this one and their dedication to keep working on this partnership. And on the last day with them we went to Reggio Emilia and we showed them the most famous buildings and squares of the town. To conclude this experience we had a pizza all together in the evening and we had fun playing games and sharing our opinions about the days we had spent together.
Having said that, people all around the world often admire Italian food and they made no exception: in fact our guests seemed to like our typical meals like pizza, pasta and so on. Of course our parents tried their best to cook tasty dishes, and even if sometimes communication was not that easy, our German friends always found a way to make us understand we did a good job. Nobody could deny that understanding and speaking with them was a bit hard, especially at first. Words, pronunciation and syntax are completely different from our mother tongue, but our friends were always ready to help us and that’s why this experience has been precious to improve our German skills.
In April we’re going to Khala for a week thanks to the partnership between our town and Khala and the dedication of our German teacher. In the past many people from Castelnovo were deported there: they were forced to work in camps to build weapons and planes for the German Reich. Nowadays the two towns have signed a partnership, and that allows us to take part in interesting projects like this one.

Studenti tedeschi a Castelnovo
Quest'anno alla fine di settembre 10 studenti di Kahla, una piccola cittadina situata nell'est della Germania, sono venuti a Castelnovo e alcuni ragazzi della nostra classe e della 5° del Liceo Linguistico li hanno ospitati. Kahla, come altre importanti città tedesche, era parte dell'ex Germania dell'est che era separata dall'ex Germania dell'ovest dal muro di Berlino. Noi siamo tre studenti della classe 4° e abbiamo ospitato tre studenti tedeschi. Anche se sono rimasti solo pochi giorni, abbiamo avuto tempo per conoscerci.
Ogni giorno era organizzato in modo da dare ai ragazzi tedeschi l'opportunità di vedere più posti caratteristici possibile, ma abbiamo anche trovato il tempo di condividere i nostri punti di vista e discutere sulle differenze tra i nostri paesi.
Il primo giorno siamo andati a piedi alla Pietra Di Bismantova: nonostante la nebbia cercasse di nasconderla quel giorno, i ragazzi hanno avuto la possibilità di ammirare il simbolo più famoso di Castelnovo. Abbiamo anche avuto l'opportunità di visitare la piccola chiesa romanica ai piedi della Pietra e lì abbiamo letto ai nostri amici degli estratti di storia su quel posto stupendo. Nel pomeriggio alcuni studenti hanno organizzato un'uscita in un centro commerciale ben noto a Reggio Emilia e ci siamo divertiti coi nostri amici. Gli studenti tedeschi hanno anche potuto comprare souvenirs e regalini per i loro amici in Germania.
Il secondo giorno siamo andati a piedi al castello vecchio di Castelnovo, ma il sentiero era talmente ripido e scivoloso che stavamo in piedi a fatica! Comunque il nostro sforzo è stato ripagato, poiché quando abbiamo raggiunto il castello abbiamo potuto ammirare l’intero paese con un panorama mozzafiato. Dopodichè abbiamo incontrato alcune autorità italiane e tedesche, che ci hanno spiegato il significato di progetti come questo e la loro determinazione nel continuare a lavorare per questo gemellaggio.
L’ultimo giorno siamo andati a Reggio Emilia e abbiamo visto insieme gli edifici e le piazze più famose della città. Per finire questa esperienza, alla sera abbiamo mangiamo tutti insieme la pizza e ci siamo divertiti giocando e condividendo le nostre opinioni riguardo i giorni trascorsi insieme.
Ma non è tutto: le persone di tutto il mondo spesso amano la cucina italiana e i nostri ospiti non hanno fatto eccezione, sembravano infatti adorare i nostri piatti tipici come pizza, pasta e altre gustose pietanze. Di certo i nostri genitori hanno fatto del loro meglio per cucinare piatti appetitosi e, anche se certe volte la comunicazione non era semplice, i nostri amici tedeschi hanno sempre trovato il modo per farci capire che avevamo fatto un buon lavoro.
Non si può negare che capire e parlare con loro sia stato un po’ complicato, specialmente all’inizio. Parole, pronuncia e sintassi sono completamente diverse dalla nostra lingua madre, ma i nostri amici erano sempre pronti ad aiutarci ed è per questo che l’esperienza è stata preziosa per migliorare la nostra conoscenza del tedesco.
In Aprile andremo a Khala per una settimana grazie al gemellaggio tra la nostra cittadina e Khala e grazie anche all’impegno della nostra professoressa di tedesco.
In passato molte persone di Castelnovo furono deportate lì: erano obbligati a lavorare in campi di lavoro per costruire armi e aerei per il Reich tedesco. Oggi le due città hanno firmato un gemellaggio e ciò ci permette di prendere parte a progetti interessanti come questo.
