The wall between Mexico and the USA
Mexico and the south-western part of California, USA, are divided by a wall with a length of more than 3000 kilometres, and this has become evident to everyone soon after the president Trump, in 2016, announced he would increase it in order to prevent illegal immigration and trafficking, such as smuggling, drug and more.
Actually, this wall had already been started before, in fact this barrier was built in the ‘90s during the presidency of George Bush.
It is made of shaped metal sheet.
The wall is equipped with very high intensity lighting, as well as a permanent surveillance system carried out with armed vehicles and helicopters.
What is the social and political significance of this wall?
The socio-political aspect has been the subject of much debate.
On the one hand, it was supported because it was seen as a measure to combat illegal immigration and also to increase national security, on the other hand, it proved to be ineffective and was also seen as an expression of racism.
The wall has had a great impact on local communities. In fact, the families living on the border were often mixed families with relationships on both sides and therefore the wall was a barrier separating them from the family and did not function at all as a form of security.
Opposition to the construction of the wall has given rise to demonstrations followed by legal campaigns, some of which have succeeded in slowing down the construction of the wall
Environmental aspect
The demonstrations also denounced the negative environmental impact that the wall had, in fact the wall crosses agricultural land, nature reserves and habitats of protected species.
The wall is not currently continuous, and most of the border between Mexico and the state of Texas is not walled off. The 3,169 km long border between the United States and Mexico passes through different lands, urban areas and deserts. The barrier is located in border territories, which are those areas that have seen the most illegal crossings in the past.
The immediate result of the construction of the barrier was an ever-increasing number of people trying to illegally cross the border through the Sonoran Desert or Baboquivari Mountain in Arizona. The migration of irregular migrants is regulated by the so-called Title 8, which allows anyone entering the United States to apply for asylum.
Thus, let’s hope that this barrier won’t be the first of many upcoming occasions to separate peoples and discriminate other cultures, as it seems that, unfortunately, the general political and social background is following this path.

Il muro tra Messico e USA
Il Messico e la parte sud-occidentale della California, negli Stati Uniti, sono divisi da un muro lungo più di 3000 chilometri, e questo è diventato evidente a tutti subito dopo che il presidente Trump, nel 2016, ha annunciato che lo avrebbe aumentato al fine di prevenire l'immigrazione clandestina e i traffici, come il contrabbando, la droga e altro ancora.
In realtà, questo muro era già stato costruito in precedenza, infatti questa barriera è stata costruita negli anni '90 durante la presidenza di George Bush.
È realizzato in lamiera sagomata.
La parete è dotata di illuminazione ad altissima intensità, oltre che di un sistema di sorveglianza permanente effettuato con veicoli armati ed elicotteri.
Qual è il significato sociale e politico di questo muro?
L'aspetto socio-politico è stato oggetto di molti dibattiti.
Da un lato, è stato sostenuto perché è stato visto come una misura per combattere l'immigrazione clandestina e anche per aumentare la sicurezza nazionale, dall'altro si è rivelato inefficace ed è stato anche visto come un'espressione di razzismo.
Il muro ha avuto un grande impatto sulle comunità locali. Infatti, le famiglie che vivevano al confine erano spesso famiglie miste con parenti da entrambe le parti e quindi il muro era una barriera che le separava dalla famiglia e non funzionava affatto come forma di sicurezza.
L'opposizione alla costruzione del muro ha dato origine a manifestazioni seguite da campagne legali, alcune delle quali sono riuscite a rallentare la costruzione del muro
Aspetto ambientale
Le manifestazioni hanno anche denunciato l'impatto ambientale negativo che il muro ha avuto, infatti il muro attraversa terreni agricoli, riserve naturali e habitat di specie protette.
Il muro non è attualmente continuo e la maggior parte del confine tra il Messico e lo stato del Texas non è murato. Il confine lungo 3.169 km tra gli Stati Uniti e il Messico attraversa diverse terre, aree urbane e deserti. La barriera si trova nei territori di confine, che sono quelle aree che hanno visto il maggior numero di attraversamenti illegali in passato.
Il risultato immediato della costruzione della barriera è stato un numero sempre crescente di persone che cercavano di attraversare illegalmente il confine attraverso il deserto di Sonora o la montagna Baboquivari in Arizona. La migrazione dei migranti irregolari è regolata dal cosiddetto Titolo 8, che consente a chiunque entri negli Stati Uniti di presentare domanda di asilo.
Speriamo quindi che questa barriera non sia la prima di molte occasioni future per separare i popoli e discriminare altre culture, poiché sembra che, purtroppo, il contesto politico e sociale generale stia seguendo questa strada.
