Virgil Abloh was born on September 30 1980 in Rockford, Illinois, a city near Chicago. His mother was a seamstress and his father had a paint company. He was an artist, architect and fashion designer, went to catholic high school and then received a Master in Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
He emerged in streetwear culture and he took inspiration from Michael Jordan.
He loved skateboarding, listening to music, sports, and he was also interested in graffiti.
He made a stage debut with Fendi before entering international fashion, and his colleague was Kanye West, who named him his personal creative director.
Virgil, after school, went on a lot of trips to New York and after several years decided to start his first streetwear brand Pyrex.
In 2013 Virgil launched “Off White”, he defined it as the gray area between black and white, and it is considered as the first luxury brand built from social media.
His parents decided to support him and his brand as well as Kanye West, Asap Rocky and Ian Connor.
Just a few years later, “Off White” became one of the first luxury fashion brands in the world, and now is one of the best-selling brands in the industry.
Virgil also made some collaborations with brands such as Levis, Moncler and Nike.
In 2016 Nike approached Virgil with the aim of starting a collaboration for 8 different pairs of shoes, 8 different Nikes, one pair of Jordan and one of Converse. These collaborations were extremely successful, the shoes are selling for more than a thousand dollars.
In 2018 Virgil became the first african-american creative director of Louis Vuitton, he debuted with his first collection in June during the Paris fashion week.
Virgil was also a dj and was called for a lot of shows and festivals like Tomorrowland Coachella, and the opening of Travis Scott’s tour in 2017.
He also worked to make a lot of music albums and directed a lot of music videos for Pop Smoke and Lil Uzi Vert.
Abloh worked frequently with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.
He was given a solo art show in Murakami Kaikai Kiki art gallery in Tokyo, Japan.
For about two years, he battled a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
On November 28, 2021 he died, He leaves his wife, Shannon, the two children Lowe and Gray, his sister Edwina and his parents. Fashion today mourns him.
Virgil was not only a brilliant designer and a visionary, but also a beautiful person.

Virgil partecipò anche ad alcune collaborazioni con Levi's , Moncler e Nike.Nel 2016 Nike si avvicina a Virgil con l'obiettivo di fare una collaborazione per 8 diverse paia di scarpe, come ad esempio le Jordan o le Converse.Queste collaborazioni hanno avuto un enorme successo e ora sono vendute a circa mille dollari.
Nel 2018 Virgil divenne il primo direttore creativo afroamericano di Louis Vuitton, debuttando con la sua prima collezione a giugno, durante la settimana della moda di Parigi.
Virgil fu anche dj e venne ingaggiato per spettacoli e festival come il Tomorrowland, il Coachella e l'apertura del tour di Travis Scott nel 2017. Lavorò anche per realizzare molti album musicali, dirigendo videoclip per Pop Smoke e Lil Uzi Vert.
Abloh lavorò spesso con l'artista giapponese Takashi Murakami. Inoltre gli venne dedicata una mostra d'arte personale nella galleria d'arte Murakami Kaikai Kiki a Tokyo, in Giappone.
Per circa due anni combatté una forma di cancro rara e aggressiva. Il 28 novembre 2021 muore lasciando la moglie Shannon, i due figli Lowe e Gray, sua sorella Edwina e i suoi genitori. La moda oggi lo piange.
Virgil non fu solamente un designer brillante e un visionario, ma anche quella che si può dire una bella persona.
