At the age of 72 Vienna Cammarota, an Italian woman, has decided to retrace Marco Polo’s path. An amazing journey between Venice, where the legendary merchant was born, and Beijing in China. Cammarota is going to cover 22000 km on foot and she hopes to arrive in December 2025. Obviously she is keen on walking for long distances, but this one will be her last challenge.
The Silk Road,which is the name of the path, is very difficult because she will have to face many climates and terrains, so she’s a little bit worried. However, she was inspired to explore by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who wrote diaries of his travels in Italy, as Marco Polo did with the Silk Road that Cammarota is covering.
The woman started her journey with only a backpack, a GoPro camera, in order to record her adventure through a lot of countries, and last but not least a phone, with which a doctor can check on her health remotely.
This wasn’t planned, but she is also carrying the Ukrainian flag. Since the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out, Cammarota has described her experience as a walk for peace. She desires to be hosted by families of each country she will visit, so she can have direct contact with different cultures and languages. By recording her journey she wants to underline and to emphasise the wealth of the differences between continents.
Moreover she wants to send out a positive message of unity between populations and of course of peace.
In conclusion we believe that her decision is not to be taken lightly. First of all because even though she’s experienced, at her age it is not easy to travel a long journey like that. You need a lot of strength and physical endurance. Secondly, an important aspect of this experience is that she wants to be immersed in the culture and in the reality of every city she will visit. This is a significant part of travelling because she will be able to discover the true customs and traditions of each population she will meet. In our opinion it's amazing that an Italian woman has this experience in order to tell something about the culture of Italy. So the journey is not only an enrichment for the people who will watch her footage but also for the people who are going to host her every day. Consequently, the fact she carries an Ukrainian flag is important too, because she’s ready to bear an extra weight just to demonstrate for peace.

All'età di 72 anni l’italiana Vienna Cammarota, ha deciso di ripercorrere il cammino di Marco Polo. Un viaggio incredibile tra Venezia, dove nacque il leggendario mercante, e Pechino in Cina. Cammarota percorrerà a piedi 22000 km e spera di arrivare a dicembre 2025. Ovviamente lei è abituata a camminare per lunghe distanze, ma questa sarà la sua ultima sfida.
La Via della Seta, che è il nome del sentiero, è molto difficile perché dovrà affrontare molti climi e terreni, quindi è un po' preoccupata. Tuttavia, è stata ispirata da Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, che scrisse diari dei suoi viaggi in Italia, come fece Marco Polo con la Via della Seta che Cammarota sta percorrendo.
La donna ha iniziato il suo viaggio con solo uno zaino, una videocamera GoPro, al fine di registrare la sua avventura attraverso molti paesi, e ultimo ma non meno importante un telefono, con il quale un medico può controllare la sua salute a distanza.
Non era previsto, ma porta anche la bandiera ucraina. Da quando è scoppiata la guerra tra Russia e Ucraina, Cammarota ha descritto la sua esperienza come un cammino per la pace. Desidera essere ospitata da famiglie di ogni paese che visiterà, in modo da poter avere un contatto diretto con culture e lingue diverse. Registrando il suo viaggio vuole sottolineare la ricchezza delle differenze tra i continenti.
Inoltre vuole inviare un messaggio positivo di unità tra le popolazioni e naturalmente di pace.
In conclusione, riteniamo che la sua decisione non debba essere presa alla leggera. Prima di tutto perché anche se ha esperienza, alla sua età non è facile viaggiare così a lungo. C’è bisogno di molta forza e resistenza fisica. In secondo luogo, un aspetto importante di questa esperienza è che vuole essere immersa nella cultura e nella realtà di ogni città che visiterà. Questa è una parte significativa del viaggio perché sarà in grado di scoprire i veri costumi e le tradizioni di ogni popolazione che incontrerà. A nostro avviso è sorprendente che una donna italiana voglia fare questa esperienza per raccontare qualcosa della cultura italiana. Quindi il viaggio non è solo un arricchimento per le persone che guarderanno il suo filmato, ma anche per le persone che la ospiteranno ogni giorno. Di conseguenza, anche il fatto che porti una bandiera ucraina è importante, perché è pronta a portare un peso in più solo per dimostrare per la pace.
