Flying machines, underground cities, space travel and time machines were some of the most common assumptions for the future in the 20th century. None of these have actually been created, but many advances have been realized recently which have effects on everyday life.
Who among us has never heard the words:"Hey Alexa!"? Alexa is an artificial intelligence in the form of a voice assistant which is able to interact with humans and perform the most varied tasks. These include telling us about the weather, playing our favorite song or getting information on the Internet. Integrated with a smart speaker connected to the Internet, it is able to expand its functions, becoming a real virtual butler capable of turning on the house lights or setting the temperature of the thermostat. However these advantages are obtained by paying a high price: artificial intelligence hears everyone's conversations.
The innovations for everyday life do not stop here: the Tesla autopilot is the first car to have semi-autonomous driving, in fact, after setting the navigator, an innovative system processes images that reproduce the road, the lanes and the objects, as well as people and animals in the visual range, allowing the car to move on its own. Despite this, it is highly recommended to keep your attention while driving and keep your hands on the steering wheel to prevent dangerous situations.
The world of music has also been influenced by new technology, in particular the singer Hatsune Miku is actually a holographic character with a software that converts the music and text entered by the user to create a virtual performance. Her voice is modeled on that of the actress Saki Fujita and her accent can be changed, vocal effects such as vibrato can be added, the dynamics and tone can be changed. Her success, especially in the East, has also led her to organize tours and live concerts.
Furthermore, the decision of the multinational meta to invest in the creation of the metaverse, which is literally a universe beyond the confines of the currently known reality, seems promising. the company formerly known as facebook is determined to realize an ambitious project that provides for an increasingly immersive, engaging and authentic social interaction between people who are far from each other. the term metaverse was firstly used in the early 1990s in literature, but in 15 years it is going to mean a network of connected virtual worlds that users can experience thanks to virtual reality headsets and haptic gloves. therefore it will be possible to interact with other users, to buy digital objects, to play games and entertain yourself in digitally reconstructed contexts.
as director robert zemeckis predicted in the film "back to the future", realized in 1985, a pair of nike sneakers has been created, which can fasten on their own with an app or a voice command. although their availability is still low, they could soon become affordable for everyone.
technology facilitates human life in many situations, but how necessary is the presence of technology in everyday life? is it worth the risk of sacrificing your privacy for more convenience? how far can technological progress advance before it has negative consequences?

Macchine volanti, città sotterranee, viaggi turistici nello spazio e macchine del tempo erano alcune delle ipotesi più comuni nel 20° secolo riguardo ciò che l’uomo avrebbe potuto vedere nel futuro. niente di tutto ciò è stato effettivamente creato, ma numerosi sono i progressi raggiunti negli ultimi anni e i loro effetti sulla vita di tutti i giorni.
chi di noi non ha mai sentito pronunciare “hey alexa!”? si tratta di un’intelligenza artificiale sotto forma di assistente vocale, che riesce ad interagire con gli esseri umani e ad eseguire i più svariati incarichi. tra questi comunicarci il meteo, riprodurre la nostra canzone preferita o attingere a informazioni su internet. integrata a uno smart speaker connesso a internet, riesce ad ampliare le sue funzionalità, diventando un vero e proprio maggiordomo virtuale capace di accendere le luci domestiche o impostare la temperatura del termostato. questi vantaggi sono ottenuti pagando un prezzo abbastanza alto: alle conversazioni quotidiane partecipa un ascoltatore in più, l'intelligenza artificiale non si ferma qui: la tesla autopilot è la prima auto ad avere una guida semi-autonoma, infatti dopo aver impostato il navigatore, un sistema innovativo elabora immagini che ricostruiscono la strada, le corsie e gli oggetti, oltre che pedoni e animali presenti nel campo visivo, permettendo alla vettura di muoversi da sola. rimane comunque vivamente consigliato mantenere l’attenzione alla guida e tenere le mani sul volante per prevenire situazioni di pericolo.
anche il mondo della musica è stato influenzato dalle nuove tecnologie, in particolare la cantante hatsune miku è in realtà un personaggio olografico dotato di un software che converte la musica e il testo inseriti dall’utente per dare vita a un’esibizione virtuale. la sua voce è modellata su quella dell’attrice saki fujita e ne si può modificare l’accento, vi si possono aggiungere effetti vocali come il vibrato e si può cambiare dinamica e tono della voce. il suo successo, soprattutto in oriente, l’ha portata anche ad organizzare tour e concerti dal vivo.
inoltre sembra promettente la decisione della multinazionale meta di investire sulla creazione del metaverso, cioè letteralmente un universo oltre i confini della realtà attualmente conosciuta. l’azienda precedentemente nota come facebook è determinata a portare a compimento una visione ambiziosa che prevede un'interazione sociale tra persone lontane fisicamente sempre più immersiva, coinvolgente e autentica. il termine metaverso venne coniato all’inizio degli anni ‘90 in ambito letterario, ma in 15 anni dovrebbe intendere una rete di mondi virtuali interconnessi di cui gli utenti possono fare esperienza grazie a visori di realtà virtuale e guanti aptici. si potrà quindi interagire con altri utenti, comprare oggetti digitali, svolgere attività ludiche e d’intrattenimento in contesti ricostruiti digitalmente.
come il regista robert zemeckis aveva predetto nel film ritorno al futuro del 1985, vediamo realizzate un paio di sneaker della nike in grado di allacciarsi da sole con un comando dall’app o un ordine vocale. per quanto la disponibilità sia ancora limitata, potrebbero diventare prima del previsto alla portata di tutti.
la tecnologia facilita la vita dell’uomo in molteplici situazioni, ma quanto è necessaria la presenza della tecnologia nella vita di tutti i giorni? vale la pena rischiare di sacrificare la propria privacy per avere maggiori comodità? quanto può avanzare il progresso tecnologico prima di avere conseguenze negative?
