Italy is a country with a great cultural heritage which includes art and also nature, but unfortunately we continue to witness many phenomena of vandalism, like the one that happened in Sicily during the night of Friday, January 7, at the Scala dei Turchi cliffs. “The splendid white marl cliff of the Scala dei Turchi, an attraction of the Agrigento area for visitors from all over the world, has been shamefully defaced,” said Nello Musumeci, Sicily’s president.
The Scala dei Turchi – or the ‘Turkish steps’ – is one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Sicily that attracts sightseers from both Italy and abroad. The white limestone cliffs, shaped like a huge staircase jutting into the Mediterranean from the coast of Realmonte in southern Sicily, were submitted as a candidate for Unesco world heritage status in 2019. The site also features prominently in the ‘Inspector Montalbano’ book series by the Italian author Andrea Camilleri.
Over the years the cliff has suffered natural erosion, also due to the huge number of tourists, some of whom have stolen fragments of rock. However, what happened recently was an even more serious act: unknown vandals have defaced the rock with red dust. Initial inspections found out that the red dye was a iron oxide powder mixed with water and the damage appears not to be permanent, as proved by the fact that the lower part of the cliffs has been cleaned by the sea waves.
Fortunately people worked hard to clean the damage. Local volunteers gave their support and did their best to fix the situation with great results and in less than 24 hours the "Scala dei Turchi" was as new. Nello Musumeci said that this act of vandalism wasn’t as serious as it had first looked and he also thanked all the volunteers for their help and for the conscientious responsibility they showed.
Immediately after the accident, the Italian police launched an investigation to identify the vandals. They did domestic searches and looked through the surveillance camera images from local shops to potentially identify people who might have bought the substance in question recently. Luckily they discovered their identity: two men that have many previous criminal charges. The vandals now have been charged with damage to the landscape heritage.
The news of this act of vandalism spread on social media, where people discussed how terrible these kinds of actions are and they slammed the perpetrators, whom they described as “ignorant troglodytes” who committed a “criminal” and “ignoble” act. People criticize the fact that nowadays vandalism is more and more common, even in our everyday lives and a solution must be found so that things like this won't happen again.
Defacing our cultural heritage means we don’t realize its importance and despite the fact that the material damages are mostly of small or medium importance, it cannot be hidden that they show a lack of understanding of the value of our heritage and they humiliate our dignity. Destroying or ruining something that belongs to everyone is totally disrespectful and acts like vandalism are crimes that should be punished.

L’Italia è un paese con un vasto patrimonio culturale che include l’arte e anche la natura, ma sfortunatamente continuiamo ad assistere a molti fenomeni di vandalismo, come quello successo in Sicilia durante la notte di venerdì 7 gennaio, alle scogliere della Scala dei Turchi. “La splendida scogliera di marna bianca della Scala dei Turchi, attrazione dell'agrigentino per visitatori da tutto il mondo, è stata vergognosamente deturpata”, ha affermato Nello Musumeci, presidente della Sicilia.
La Scala dei Turchi, è una delle attrazioni turistiche più iconiche della Sicilia che attrae visitatori sia dall'Italia che dall’estero. Le bianche scogliere di calcare, a forma di enorme scalinata che si protende nel Mediterraneo dalla costa di Realmonte nella Sicilia meridionale, sono state addirittura presentate come un candidato per lo status di patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO nel 2019. Il sito ha anche un posto di rilievo nella serie di libri "Il commissario Montalbano" dell'autore italiano Andrea Camilleri.
Nel corso degli anni la rupe ha subito l'erosione naturale ma anche danni causati dall'enorme affluenza di turisti, alcuni dei quali hanno trafugato frammenti di roccia. Tuttavia ciò che è successo recentemente è stato un atto ancora più grave: la roccia è stata deturpata con una polvere rossa. Le prime ispezioni hanno stabilito che il colorante rosso era una polvere di ossido di ferro mescolata con acqua e il danno non sembra essere permanente, come dimostrato dal fatto che la parte bassa delle scogliere è stata ripulita dalle onde del mare.
Fortunatamente in tanti si sono impegnati per pulire i danni che questi vandali hanno commesso. Volontari locali hanno dato il loro supporto e hanno fatto del loro meglio per sistemare la situazione con grandi risultati e in meno di 24 ore la "Scala dei Turchi" era come nuova. Nello Musumeci ha detto che questi atti di vandalismo non hanno creato un grande rischio e ha inoltre ringraziato tutti i volontari per la generosa azione e per la scrupolosa responsabilità dimostrata.
Subito dopo l'incidente la polizia italiana ha lanciato un’indagine per identificare i vandali. Sono state svolte perquisizioni e sono state rilevate le immagini dalle telecamere di sorveglianza dei negozi locali per identificare chiunque avesse comprato recentemente la sostanza in questione. Fortunatamente sono state scoperte le loro identità: due uomini che hanno già alcuni precedenti penali. I vandali ora sono stati denunciati per danni al patrimonio paesaggistico.
Sui social si è diffusa la voce di questo atto di vandalismo e si è discusso di quanto terribili siano queste azioni, i vandali sono stati attaccati e descritti come "ignoranti trogloditi" che hanno commesso un atto "criminale" e "ignobile". Molti hanno criticato il fatto che al giorno d'oggi gli atti di vandalismo sono sempre più comuni, anche nelle nostre vite quotidiane, e bisogna trovare una soluzione così che non accadano più.
Deturpare il patrimonio culturale è sinonimo di inciviltà e nonostante i danni materiali siano in prevalenza di media o piccola importanza, non si può nascondere il fatto che sul piano valoriale siano sempre altissimi e che umilino la nostra stessa dignità. Distruggere o rovinare qualcosa che appartiene a tutti è veramente irrispettoso e atti come il vandalismo sono crimini che dovrebbero essere puniti.
