Thanks to a simple but effective gesture, a teenage girl was saved from kidnapping. This signal went viral with Tik Tok, a well-known platform among young people. The young girl’s gesture alerted a man who, passing by the kidnapper’s car, managed to rescue her by recognizing the alarm. As a result, he called the authorities to warn them of the danger the teenager was in.
To reconstruct the story: on Tuesday morning 8th November, the girl's parents in North Carolina reported that the girl had gone missing and then was found in a car in Kentucky two days later. The 16-year-old used gestures designed to help victims of domestic abuse and she tried to draw the attention of passers-by. Authorities said that they arrested a 61-year-old man. They said in a statement that a driver called the police after noting that “a passenger in a car made a gesture famous on the social media platform TikTok.”
The caller pointed out that the girl “seems to be in trouble” and was held by an older man. On Friday afternoon 10th November, police arrested James Herbert Brick, 61, of North Carolina, while driving near a highway in Kentucky. The girl, who asked not to be named, told the police that she had traveled to several U.S. states such as North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio.
According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, the gesture is done with one hand when a person is in distress.The victim raises her hand with his palm facing out, then puts her thumb in her hand and then puts her fingers on her thumb. The campaign called “Danger Signals” was broadcast on social media during the initial lockdown of the 2020 pandemic to address the rise in domestic violence.

Grazie a un gesto semplice ma efficace, un'adolescente è stata salvata da un rapimento. Questo segnale è diventato virale con Tik Tok, una piattaforma ben nota tra i giovani. Il gesto della giovane ha avvisato un uomo che, passando accanto all'auto del rapitore, è riuscito a salvarla riconoscendo il famoso allarme. Di conseguenza, ha chiamato le autorità per avvertire del pericolo in cui si trovava l'adolescente.
Per ricostruire la storia: martedì mattina 8 novembre, i genitori della ragazza in North Carolina hanno riferito che la ragazza era scomparsa e poi è stata trovata in una macchina in Kentucky due giorni dopo.
