In this article, we would like to talk about a really popular topic which involves the British writer J.K. Rowling: sex and gender issues.

In December 2019, Maya Forstater lost her job because she wrote “transphobic” messages on Twitter. J.K. Rowling took the chance to tweet her support to all the people who risk their careers because they expressed their opinions, saying that people should live their lives as they wish, without the fear of being punished for what they say. So the point was freedom of speech.

Her interest in gender issues began much earlier than this event, even though she had never openly written about it. In October 2007 during an interview, she was asked whether professor Albus Silente had ever been in love or not, and she answered by saying that she imagined this character as a homosexual man who fell in love with his best friend. So, she cared about these issues to create more complex and true-to-life characters.

What J.K.Rowling underlines is the importance of biological sex, which is not something granted to some trans people who feel like they are imprisoned in a body that doesn’t belong to them. Furthermore, there’s no balance between the ones who are activists and people who don’t belong to the “trans world”. This lack of balance has even affected politics and influent people’s opinions. Rowling mentions Marks & Spencer (a chain in the UK)  because they're allowing any man who says they identify as a woman into women’s changing rooms. This has led to some trans activists getting very angry if women refuse to use these changing rooms, calling them “TERFs”, an acronym which stands for “Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists”.

What mostly interests Rowling is the fact that these activists don’t seem to understand that the possibility to use women’s changing rooms can be used as a front by psychopaths or ill-intentioned men.

Another topic that J.K.Rowling faces is her fear that more and more girls are now wishing to transition to man because they want to escape bullying and they want to achieve privileges which now only men have. On the other hand, there are a lot of people who seem to be detransitioning because they regret taking steps that altered their bodies and often their fertility. Despite this, trans activists say that nobody can be persuaded into being trans because it’s an innate human feature, like sexual orientation. They also maintain that teenagers whose trans compulsions are repressed are more likely to commit suicide.

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as that.

Nowadays this phenomenon is increasingly widespread because of social media such as Reddit, Instagram, YouTube and Tumblr which spread gender dysphoria among the youngest and work as “echo chambers”. Rowling herself said that if she had been born thirty years later, she would probably have found more support online and she’d have tried to become the son her father said he’d have preferred.

Fortunately, she found her sense of life in books and music which made her realize that she could be strong and powerful and that it was ok to feel confused and unsure of what or who she was.

The writer has met a lot of trans people including a woman who’s very open about her past as a gay man. She says that this woman had gone through a lot of psychotherapy in order to overcome her transition. Nowadays people don’t need to take hormones to get a Gender Recognition Certificate: this means that if a man intends to have no surgery and takes no hormones, he could be seen as a woman before the law.

By talking to many people she came to realize that we’re living in the most misogynistic period she has ever experienced. In fact, women are shamed and dehumanized by society and politics, because women are said to ask for trouble.

Trans activists want women to accept and admit that there’s no difference between trans women and biological ones.

“Woman” becomes just a concept in a society ruled by men and what she says is that for the women who have been abused by violent men this language is hostile and alienating.

Trans activism pushed the writer to revisit her traumatic personal experience. J.K.Rowling is a domestic abuse and sexual assault survivor. This fact led her to be really protective of her daughter from her first marriage.

She managed to escape her first husband and find happiness with another man. Despite his love, the scars caused by violence have never disappeared, no matter how loved she is.

She decided to tell her story in order to encourage women who have had similar experiences to talk about it without being frightened.

Sadly, there are a lot of women who are terrified by trans activists because they’re afraid of doxxing, losing their jobs and of violence.

Rowling thinks that what happens to women also happens to trans women who have the right to be free to be themselves.

Politicians ignore women’s complaints and Rowling says she hopes women who are fighting for their rights have decent men and trans people alongside them.

Everything she asks for is empathy and understanding for all women who’re victims or survival of a crime and she wants all of them to be heard.

In questo articolo, vorremmo parlare di un argomento molto comune che ha coinvolto la scrittrice britannica J.K.Rowling: la tematica uomo-donna e questioni di genere.

Nel Dicembre 2019, Maya Forstater perse il lavoro perché aveva scritto dei messaggi “transfobici” su Twitter. J.K.Rowling colse l’occasione per twittare il suo supporto verso tutte le persone che rischiano la loro carriera perché esprimono le loro opinioni, dicendo che si dovrebbe essere liberi di vivere come preferiamo, senza la paura di essere puniti per ciò che diciamo. Quindi il punto del suo discorso era la libertà di espressione.

Il suo interesse per le questioni di genere iniziò molto prima di questo fatto, anche se non ne aveva mai parlato apertamente. Nell’ottobre 2007, durante un’intervista, le fu chiesto se il professor Albus Silente fosse mai stato innamorato, e lei rispose dicendo che aveva immaginato questo personaggio come un uomo omosessuale innamorato del suo migliore amico. Quindi si è sempre preoccupata di questi argomenti per creare personaggi più complessi e verosimili.

Ciò che J.K.Rowling sostiene è l’importanza del sesso biologico, che non è qualcosa di scontato per alcuni transgender che si sentono imprigionati in un corpo che non gli appartiene. Sostiene inoltre, che ci sono molti contrasti tra coloro che sono attivisti trans e quelle persone che non appartengono al “mondo trans”. Questa mancanza di equilibrio ha intaccato anche la politica e l’opinione di persone influenti. Rowling cita Marks&Spencer (una catena di negozi nel Regno Unito) perché permettono ad ogni uomo che dice di identificarsi come donna di accedere ai camerini femminili. Questo ha portato alcuni attivisti trans ad innervosirsi molto se le donne rifiutano di utilizzare questi camerini, chimanadole “TERFs”, un acronimo creato da loro stessi che significa “Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist” (femministe radicali contrarie ai trans).

Ciò che interessa di più alla Rowling è il fatto che questi attivisti non sembrano capire che questa possibilità, di usare i camerini, potrebbe essere usata come scusa da psicopatici o uomini malintenzionati che vogliono fare del male alle donne.

Un altro argomento che J.K.Rowling analizza è la sua paura che sempre più ragazze desiderino transitare a uomo perché vogliono sfuggire al bullismo o raggiungere dei privilegi che oggi hanno solo gli uomini. D’altro canto ci sono anche molte persone che sembrano voler de-transitare perché si sono pentite di aver fatto delle scelte che hanno modificato il loro corpo e, spesso, la loro fertilità. Nonostante ciò, gli attivisti trans sostengono che nessuno può essere convinto ad essere trans da qualcun altro, perché secondo loro essere trans è una caratteristica umana innata, come l’orientamento sessuale. Sostengono anche che gli adolescenti le cui pulsioni transessuali sono represse sono più inclini al suicidio.

Ma non è tutto così semplice. Oggi questo fenomeno è largamente diffuso a causa dei social media come Reddit, Instagram, Youtube e Tumblr che diffondono la disforia di genere tra i più giovani e lavorano come “camere eco”. La stessa Rowling ha detto che se fosse nata trent’anni più tardi, avrebbe cercato di diventare il figlio che suo padre avrebbe preferito e probabilmente avrebbe trovato supporto online. Fortunatamente, ha invece trovato il senso della sua vita nei libri e nella musica che le hanno fatto capire che poteva essere forte e che non era sbagliato sentirsi confusa e insicura riguardo alla sua identità.

La scrittrice ha incontrato molte persone trans, inclusa una donna molto disponibile a parlare del suo passato di uomo gay. Dice che questa donna ha affrontato un lungo periodo di psicoterapia per superare la sua transizione. Oggi non c’è bisogno di assumere ormoni per ottenere un certificato di riconoscimento di genere: questo significa che se un uomo non intende fare un intervento chirurgico e non prende ormoni può essere riconosciuto come donna davanti alla legge.

Parlando con molte altre persone è arrivata a capire che stiamo vivendo nel  periodo più misogino di cui lei abbia esperienza. Infatti le donne vengono umiliate e disumanizzate da società e politica che le accusano di “andare in cerca di problemi”.

Gli attivisti trans cercano di convincere le donne ad accettare e ammettere che non esiste differenza tra le donne trans e quelle che sono nate così. “Donna” diventa un'idea in una società controllata dagli uomini e sostiene che per le donne che sono state vittime di abuso e violenza questo linguaggio risulta essere ostile e alienante.

Gli attivisti hanno quindi spinto la scrittrice a ricordare la sua esperienza traumatica. J.K.Rowling è sopravvissuta ad abusi sessuali domestici. Questo fatto l’ha portata a diventare molto protettiva nei confronti della figlia del suo primo matrimonio. É riuscita ad allontanarsi dal suo primo marito e ora vive con un uomo che la ama veramente. Ma nonostante questo amore le ferite della violenza subita non sono mai sparite. Ha deciso di raccontare la sua storia per incoraggiare le donne che hanno avuto esperienze simili a parlarne senza paura.

Purtroppo ci sono molte donne spaventate dagli attivisti trans perchè temono di diventare vittime di doxxing (la diffusione online di dati privati), di violenze o di perdere il lavoro. Rowling pensa che quello che succede alle donne succede anche alle donne trans che invece hanno il diritto di essere liberamente se stesse. I politici ignorano le loro lamentele e la scrittrice spera che le donne che stanno combattendo per i loro diritti abbiano al loro fianco persone trans e uomini rispettabili. Quello che chiede è comprensione ed empatia verso le donne vittime o sopravvissute a crimini che cercano di far sentire le loro voci.
