Volunteering means providing service and helping people who have a more or less urgent need for assistance and help.Volunteers therefore, according to the field in which they provide service, will have to make themselves available at almost all times having as unique objective the well-being of the person who is in a situation of necessity or need. In particular, voluntary activity can be individual or collective as associations.Over time, the term volunteering has become more and more widespread, and fortunately today there are many volunteers who help other people individually or in associations.In this regard, also our territory offers the opportunity to engage in voluntary activities. But what are the associations we can find in Castelnovo ne' Monti? And what kind of support do they guarantee?
CASA DELLA CARITÀ (CHARITY HOUSE)
The Charity House, a place of welcome for elderly and disabled, provides support and help to all those people that, for more or less serious health reasons, need someone to take care of them.
The “guests” at the Charity House are constantly followed and helped by people who have chosen to put their lives at the service of others, very often they are nuns and priests. No special medical skills are required and, for this reason, there are many activities a volunteer can do: cooking, cleaning the house or providing direct assistance (personal care and hygiene).Giving your own contribution is very precious not only to reduce the amount of work which falls on nuns and priests but it’s above all a gesture of love, affection and generosity for the “patients” who very often, in addition to purely physiological needs such as washing and eating, need company.
CROCE VERDE (GREEN CROSS)
Some days ago, my friend Federica and I went to Croce Verde (Green Cross) of Castelnovo and Vetto, to talk to the chairman of this association. Here are some of the questions we asked him: When was the association formed? What services do you offer and how much work do you carry out per year? What kind of staff is needed on the ambulance? How can you become a volunteer? How have you managed to work in this time of pandemic?
The association was established in 1975 and so in 2020 it turned 45 years old. It was formed by people from all walks of life who wanted to help the community. These people were not trained like today's volunteers. At the beginning, this association was called NEAR and dealt with rescue work in the whole Apennine region. Then similar associations were formed: Croce Verde of Busana and Croce Verde of Villa Minozzo.
The association helps people in many different ways: in cases of emergency people can be taken to hospital; people can be accompanied to hospital appointments; food can be brought to the elderly. Then there is a more playful part such as having Santa Claus go to all people’s homes and hospitals during the Christmas time, and the sale of cakes at local fairs. Of the 20.000 services, only 2.000 are emergency services; the others are all ordinary services.
On the ambulance, for emergencies, there are three or four volunteers: a driver, the one who also maintains communications; two volunteer rescuers, one of them is an expert assistant, and possibly a third volunteer who is not yet qualified. For ordinary transports, there is only a driver and the simple rescuer who stays in the back with the patient.
We asked him what you have to do to become a volunteer and he told us that you have to enrol on a course which normally starts at the end of January of every year. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic they don't know whether it will be possible to do it face-to-face this year, but they wouldn't want to do it online either, so it may be postponed.
We also asked him how they are working now with the pandemic, and if the volunteers are afraid. He told us that at the beginning they were a little afraid, because they did not have much protection and many volunteers even stopped working. Afterwards, they came back and worked very long shifts to deal with all the extra work.
We asked him what volunteering meant for him and he said that for him volunteering is a privilege because he can help other people.
In conclusion, we hope you now have an idea of how these organizations work. For us volunteering means being able to help others and be useful to the population. As Don Pino Puglisi said, "If each of us does something, together we can do a lot".

Fare volontariato significa fornire servizio e aiutare le persone che hanno un bisogno più o meno urgente di assistenza e aiuto. I volontari quindi, a seconda del campo in cui forniscono servizio dovranno mettere a disposizione se stessi e il proprio tempo avendo come unico obbiettivo il benessere della persona che si trova in una situazione di bisogno. Nello specifico, l’attività di volontariato può essere individuale o di gruppo; in questo caso si parla di associazioni. A tal proposito, anche il nostro territorio offre l’opportunità di impegnarsi in attività di volontariato. Ma quali sono le associazioni presenti a Castelnovo ne' Monti? E quale tipo di supporto garantiscono?
LA CASA DI CARITÀ
La Casa di Carità, luogo di accoglienza per anziani e disabili, fornisce sostegno e aiuto a tutti coloro che per motivi di salute più o meno gravi hanno bisogno di qualcuno che si prenda cura di loro. Gli “ospiti” alla casa di carità sono costantemente seguiti e aiutati da persone che scelgono di mettere la propria vita al servizio degli altri, molto spesso si tratta di suore e preti. Non sono richieste particolari competenze in ambito medico e per questo motivo le attività che un volontario può svolgere sono molteplici: cucinare, pulire la struttura oppure fornire assistenza diretta (cura e igiene della persona). Dare il proprio contributo è molto prezioso non solo per ridurre il lavoro impegnativo destinato alle suore e ai preti ma è soprattutto un gesto d’amore, d’affetto e di generosità per gli anziani che molto spesso oltre ai bisogni puramente fisiologici come lavarsi e mangiare hanno bisogno di compagnia.
LA CROCE VERDE
Qualche giorno fa io e la mia amica Federica siamo andate alla Croce Verde di Castelnovo e Vetto, per parlare con il presidente di questa associazione. Ecco alcune delle domande che gli abbiamo posto: Quando è stata costituita l'associazione? Quali servizi offri e quanto lavoro svolgete all'anno? Che tipo di personale è necessario sull'ambulanza? Come si può diventare un volontario? Come siete riusciti a lavorare in questo periodo di pandemia?
L'associazione è stata fondata nel 1975 e così nel 2020 ha compiuto 45 anni. È stata formata da persone di ogni estrazione sociale che volevano aiutare la comunità. Queste persone non erano formate come i volontari di oggi. All'inizio questa associazione si chiamava NEAR e si occupava di soccorsi in tutta la regione appenninica. Successivamente si formarono le altre associazioni simili: la Croce Verde di Busana e la Croce Verde di Villa Minozzo.
L'associazione fornisce aiuto in tanti modi diversi: in caso di emergenza i malati possono essere ricoverati in ospedale; possono essere portate agli appuntamenti ospedalieri; si fornisce anche il servizio di consegna del cibo agli anziani soli. Poi c'è una parte più ludica come un Babbo Natale che va nelle case private (case di riposo) e gli ospedali durante il periodo natalizio e la vendita di torte nelle fiere locali. Dei 20.000 servizi, solo 2.000 sono servizi di emergenza; gli altri sono tutti servizi ordinari.
Sull'ambulanza per le emergenze ci sono tre o quattro volontari: un autista, quello che mantiene anche le comunicazioni; due soccorritori volontari, uno di loro è un assistente esperto e in certi casi un terzo volontario non ancora qualificato. Per i trasporti ordinari c'è solo un autista e il semplice soccorritore che resta dietro con il paziente.
Gli abbiamo chiesto cosa si deve fare per diventare volontari e lui ci ha detto che bisogna iscriversi a un corso che normalmente inizia alla fine di gennaio di ogni anno. Sfortunatamente, a causa della pandemia non sanno se quest'anno sarà possibile farlo in presenza, ma non vorrebbero nemmeno farlo online, quindi potrebbe essere posticipato.
Gli abbiamo anche chiesto come stanno lavorando ora con la pandemia e se i volontari hanno paura. Ci ha detto che all'inizio avevano un po' di paura, perché non avevano molta protezione e molti volontari hanno addirittura smesso di lavorare. Successivamente, sono tornati e hanno fatto turni molto lunghi per affrontare tutto il lavoro extra.
Gli abbiamo chiesto cosa significasse per lui il volontariato e ci ha detto che per lui il volontariato è un privilegio perché può aiutare altre persone.
Poiché vi abbiamo parlato di alcune organizzazioni di volontariato, speriamo di avervi dato un'idea di come funzionano queste organizzazioni. Per noi volontariato significa poter aiutare gli altri ed essere utili alla popolazione. Come diceva don Pino Puglisi, "Se ognuno di noi fa qualcosa, insieme possiamo fare molto".
