“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world” (From the film: “Dead Poets’ Society”). Too often we forget how much words and ideas matter, it’s from them that actions arise. It’s especially important not to underestimate what in the eyes of human beings seem like small actions: it’s the union of small things that generates change . 65 years ago it was the “ no” said by a black woman that was the spark of a big change in history. Her name was Rosa Parks and on that day she refused to stand up from a seat for white people only on a bus. Rosa decided to remain seated, but after her action, many people all around the world stood up, not to leave their place to white people, but to claim their rights.
It was 1963 when a man gave a speech about his Dream in front of a huge crowd. Since that period, many things have changed, but for sure human beings haven’t stopped staining history with blood. In fact, if you look at what’s happening in the world, you wonder if Martin Luther King’s Dream was a utopia because today there are still too many people who are trying to demonstrate that their lives matter.
"Black Lives Matter" is an international activist movement against racism. This hashtag was created by three women in 2013. One of them uploaded a post on Facebook that said: "Black, I love you, I love us, our lives matter!" It became popular when on 26 February 2012, in Florida, George Zimmerman walked free after shooting Trayvon Martin, a 17 year old Afro-American. In this period the visibility of the movement has increased, but on the other hand also the number of murders of black people is rising.
On 25 May 2020, in Minneapolis, George Floyd, a 46 year old man was killed by the police in a street. An agent choked him while restraining him and his last words were: "I can't breathe." This terrible scene encouraged people to take to the streets and to protest against racism and inequality. This movement is actually one of the biggest movements that has ever existed; activists have organized over 4700 protests with about 15 to 26 millions participants, and a lot of them are white.
“Black Lives Matter” is a pacifist movement, but during the protests some people, overwhelmed by rage and sorrow, lost sight of the true purpose: it’s not answering to violence with other violence that change is obtained. We’ll never know what it means to be heirs to a sorrow rooted in history, which still continues to spread, but we have the duty to act always with respect to others and life. Only through this awareness we’ll make Martin Luther King’s dream come true.
We live in a world which is always more globalized and at the same time focused on the single individual, where differences and personal identity are slowly disappearing. But differences among people do exist and we must protect them: they shouldn’t scare us, but rather be a source of inner enrichment. Often, in the world, equality in front of the law is a formality, because in reality inequality prevails . It’s to this that we should dedicate our attention and awaken our sleepy consciences, because we are all different shades of the same color: the human race.

“Non importa ciò che le persone ti dicono, le parole e le idee possono cambiare il mondo” (dal film: “L’attimo fuggente”). Troppo spesso dimentichiamo quanto le parole e le idee contino, è da esse che derivano le azioni. Soprattutto è importante non sottovalutare quelle che agli occhi degli esseri umani appaiono come piccole azioni: è l’unione di tante piccole cose che genera il cambiamento. Sessantacinque anni fa, fu proprio il “no” detto da una donna di colore ad essere la scintilla che accese un grande mutamento nella storia. Il suo nome era Rosa Parks e quel giorno rifiutò di alzarsi dal posto sul bus, destinato solo alle persone bianche. Rosa decise di rimanere seduta, ma dopo la sua azione, tantissime persone nel mondo si alzarono in piedi, non per lasciare il posto ai bianchi, ma per rivendicare i loro diritti.
Era il 1963, quando un uomo tenne il suo discorso di fronte ad un'immensa folla, affermando di avere un sogno. Da allora, molte cose sono cambiate, ma di certo gli esseri umani non hanno smesso di macchiare col sangue la storia. Infatti, dando uno sguardo al mondo, sorge spontaneo domandarsi se il sogno di Martin Luther King fosse un’utopia, perché oggi ancora troppe persone stanno cercando di dimostrare che le loro vite contano.
Il "Black Lives Matter" è un movimento attivista internazionale contro il razzismo. Questo hashtag è stato creato da tre donne nel 2013. Divenne popolare quando il 26 Febbraio 2012, in Florida, George Zimmerman fu assolto dopo aver sparato a Trayvon Martin, un ragazzo afro-americano di 17 anni. In questo periodo la visibilità del movimento è aumentata, ma d'altra parte, anche il numero degli omicidi è cresciuto.
Il 25 Maggio 2020, a Minneapolis, George Floyd, un uomo di 46 anni è stato ucciso dalla polizia per strada. Un agente lo ha soffocato mentre lo immobilizzava e le sue ultime parole sono state: "Non riesco a respirare." Questa terribile scena ha incoraggiato tante persone a scendere in strada e a protestare contro il razzismo e la disuguaglianza. Questo movimento è attualmente uno dei più grandi movimenti mai esistiti; gli attivisti hanno organizzato più di 4700 proteste dai 15 ai 26 milioni di partecipanti, e molti di loro sono bianchi.
Il “Black Lives Matter” è un movimento pacifista, ma durante la protesta, alcuni manifestanti sopraffatti dalla rabbia e da un profondo dolore, hanno perso di vista il vero obiettivo: non è rispondendo alla violenza con altra violenza che si ottiene il cambiamento. Noi non sapremo mai che cosa significhi essere eredi di un dolore radicato nella storia, che ancora continua a propagarsi, ma abbiamo il dovere di agire sempre nel rispetto dell’altro e della vita. Solo attraverso questa consapevolezza potremo fare del sogno di Martin Luther King la nostra realtà.
Viviamo in un mondo sempre più globalizzato e concentrato sul singolo individuo, dove le differenze e l'identità di ciascuno stanno lentamente scomparendo. Ma le differenze tra i popoli esistono e vanno conservate: esse non devono spaventarci, ma piuttosto essere fonte di arricchimento interiore. Spesso, nel mondo, l’uguaglianza di fronte alla legge è una formalità, perché nei fatti è la disuguaglianza a prevalere. A questo dovremmo dedicare la nostra attenzione e risvegliare le nostre coscienze dormienti, in quanto siamo tutti sfumature diverse di uno stesso colore: la razza umana.
