Today we would like to talk about the speech that the Korean boyband BTS gave at the 75th UN General Assembly on Wednesday 23 September.
What was BTS’ UN speech about?
In the speech, BTS delivered a message of persistence and hope, speaking about their own struggles with loneliness and creativity during the pandemic.
But first: what is the UN?
The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization established after World War II, made up of 193 Member States that aims to preserve international peace and security, develop friendly relations among states and achieve international cooperation. It’s the largest and the most powerful international organization in the world and its headquarter is based in New York City.
On Wednesday 23 September Stewart Simonson, the Assistant Director-General, moderated a virtual high-level event hosted by the Co-Chairs of the Group of Friends of Solidarity for Global Health Security on Protraction of the COVID-19 Crisis. The event looked at the impact of the pandemic on future generations, and the importance of mitigating these effects, as well as what United Nations, Member States and partners are doing to address the crisis. Due to the ongoing situation, the 75th UN General Assembly was held online through virtual meetings and pre-recorded speeches.
Welcoming remarks were made by Ministers of Canada, Denmark, Republic of Korea, Republic of Sierra Leone and the State of Qatar, as Co-Chairs of the Group of Friends and Co-Hosts of the event. This event also included brief videos from important figures such as Ms. Henrietta Fore (Executive Director of UNICEF) or Dr Kamran Khan, Founder and CEO of BlueDot Inc.
Among the guests there was also BTS, the most successful South Korean boyband at the moment, who delivered a message of hope and reassurance, encouraging people to continue living on despite present difficulties. After an introduction by Ms Henrietta Fore, each member (filmed individually) addressed a message of hope, talked about how the outbreak of the pandemic interrupted their plans for the year and described their own personal struggles and feelings of loneliness.
The first member to talk was the group leader RM, who spoke about his feeling of being lost caused by the pandemic: “COVID-19 was beyond my imagination. Our world tour was totally cancelled, all our plans went away, and I became alone. I looked up but couldn't see the stars at night." The other member Jimin echoed the same feeling, saying “I felt hopeless. Everything fell apart. I could only look outside my window, I could only go to my room. Yesterday, I was singing and dancing with fans around the world and now my world had shrunk to a room.”
Then the whole group remarked the connection they have with each other and with their fans all around the world. “The room itself was small, but my world and our world reached far and wide. In this world we had our instruments, our phones and our fans.” ”We embraced all of these emotions and the seven of us began to make music together”, Suga and J-Hope said.
BTS have always used their music and songs as a tool to give their fans strength and self consciousness. “If there’s something I can do, if our voices can give strength to people, then that’s what we want and that’s what we’ll keep on doing.” They also try to motivate their followers to value their own mental health, happiness and self love “Thinking about the future and trying hard are all important. But cherishing yourself, encouraging yourself and keeping yourself happy is the most important. In a world of uncertainty, we must cherish the importance of “me,” “you” and “us””, said the eldest member Jin.
This isn’t the first time BTS has spoken at the UN and delivered such important remarks: in 2018 they became the first K-Pop group to give a speech at the United Nations, with the memorable phrase of the leader RM “No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin color, gender identity: speak yourself”. They also partnered with UNICEF with the “Love Myself” anti-violence campaign, launched in November 2017 and which raised almost 1.4 million dollars.
This time the message that BTS wanted to deliver was one of hope and persistence.
“Life goes on. Let’s live on” they said together at the end of their video message.

Oggi vorremmo parlare del discorso che la boyband coreana BTS ha tenuto alla 75ª Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite mercoledì 23 settembre.
Di cosa parlava il discorso dei BTS alle Nazioni Unite?
Nel discorso, i BTS hanno diffuso un messaggio di resistenza e speranza, parlando delle loro lotte con la solitudine e la creatività durante la pandemia.
Ma prima: cosa sono le Nazioni Unite (UN)?
Le Nazioni Unite sono un’organizzazione intergovernativa nata dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, composta da 193 Stati membri che mira a preservare la pace e la sicurezza internazionale, sviluppare relazioni amichevoli tra gli Stati e raggiungere la cooperazione internazionale. E’ la più grande e la più potente organizzazione internazionale nel mondo e la sua sede si trova a New York City.
Mercoledì 23 settembre Stewart Simon, Assistente Direttore-Generale, ha moderato un evento virtuale di alto livello ospitato dai co-presidenti del Gruppo di Amici della Solidarietà per la Sicurezza Sanitaria Globale sulla protrazione della crisi del COVID-19.
L’evento ha esaminato l’impatto del protrarsi della pandemia sulle generazioni future, e l’importanza di mitigare questi impatti, così come ciò che le Nazioni Unite, gli Stati membri e i partner stanno facendo per affrontare la crisi. A causa della situazione attuale, la 75a Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite si è tenuta online attraverso incontri virtuali e discorsi preregistrati.
I ministri del Canada, della Danimarca, della Repubblica di Corea, della Repubblica di Sierra Leone e dello Stato del Qatar, essendo co-presidenti del Gruppo di Amici e co-organizzatori dell’evento hanno introdotto l’evento con saluti di benvenuto. Questo evento ha incluso anche brevi video di figure importanti come Ms. Henrietta Fore (Direttore Esecutivo dell’UNICEF) o Dr Kamran Khan, fondatore e CEO di BlueDot Inc.
Tra gli ospiti c’erano anche i BTS, la boyband sudcoreana più famosa del momento, che ha diffuso un messaggio di speranza e rassicurazione, incoraggiando tutti a continuare a vivere nonostante le difficoltà attuali. Dopo un’introduzione da parte di Ms Henrietta Fore, ogni membro (filmato individualmente) ha mandato un messaggio di speranza, ha parlato di come lo scoppio della pandemia ha interrotto i loro piani per l’anno e ha descritto le proprie lotte personali e i sentimenti di solitudine.
Il primo membro a parlare è stato il leader del gruppo, RM, che ha parlato della sua sensazione di sentirsi perso a causa della pandemia: “COVID-19 è stato oltre la mia immaginazione. Il nostro tour mondiale è stato totalmente cancellato, tutti i nostri piani sono stati cancellati, e sono diventato solo. Ho guardato in alto ma non riuscivo a vedere le stelle di notte.” L’altro membro Jimin ha riecheggiato la stessa sensazione, dicendo “mi sono sentito senza speranza. Tutto è crollato. Potevo guardare solo fuori dalla mia finestra, potevo andare solo nella mia stanza. Ieri stavo cantando e ballando con i fans in giro per il mondo e ora il mio mondo si è ristretto in una stanza.”
Poi tutto il gruppo ha sottolineato il legame che hanno tra di loro e con i loro fans in tutto il mondo. “La stanza in sé era piccola, ma il mio mondo e il nostro mondo ha raggiunto tutti ovunque. In questo mondo avevamo i nostri strumenti, i nostri cellulari e i nostri fans.” “Abbiamo abbracciato tutte queste emozioni e noi sette abbiamo iniziato a fare musica insieme”, hanno detto Suga e J-Hope .
I BTS hanno sempre usato la loro musica e le loro canzoni come mezzo per dare ai loro fans forza e coscienza di sé. “Se c’è qualcosa che posso fare, se le nostre voci possono dare forza alle persone, allora è ciò che vogliamo ed è ciò che continueremo a fare.” La band prova anche a motivare i loro seguaci a valorizzare la propria salute mentale, la felicità e l’amore di se stessi. “Pensare al futuro e sforzarsi sono tutte cose importanti. Ma apprezzare se stessi, incoraggiarsi e mantenersi felici è la cosa più importante. In un mondo di incertezza, dobbiamo apprezzare l’importanza di “me”, “te” e “noi””, ha detto Jin, il membro più anziano.
Non è la prima volta che i BTS parlano alle Nazioni Unite e pronunciano osservazioni così importanti: nel 2018 sono diventati il primo gruppo K-Pop a tenere un discorso alle Nazioni Unite, con la memorabile frase del leader RM “Non importa chi sei, da dove vieni, il colore della tua pelle, l'identità di genere: parla di te stesso ”. Hanno anche collaborato con l'UNICEF con la campagna antiviolenza “Love Myself”, lanciata nel novembre 2017 e che ha raccolto quasi 1,4 milioni di dollari.
Questa volta il messaggio che i BTS hanno voluto trasmettere era di speranza e tenacia.
"La vita va avanti. Continuiamo a vivere", hanno detto insieme alla fine del loro videomessaggio.
