Considerations of a high school student.
2020 will always be remembered for the economic crisis caused by Covid-19, for which it has been necessary to close many businesses, schools included.
Probably history books will not investigate the topic of smart working for both workers and students, but the people who are forced to use it now know well the difficulties it brought.
I can talk and explain the situation from the point of view of a student who attends the last year of high school and must measure her knowledge with the final exam.
Starting with the disadvantages the worst one is distance: we used to have lessons face to face with our teachers and we had the opportunity to ask and get an answer in a few seconds thus saving time (which at this point of the school path is essential), whereas during online classes the audio often crashes and the answer must be repeated.
Another problem is having the necessary means: not everyone has a computer to regularly follow all the lessons or a good Wi-Fi connection, but those who have, can participate even if they are not in their home (for example if they are locked in another home and the quarantine does not allow them to go home).
The “digital school” questions the rating scale usually used by teachers because they are afraid that students will give in to the temptation to cheat and some of them consider it appropriate to lower scores because of the distrust which might arise in this situation.
These are comprehensible doubts, but they may compromise the relationship that students and teachers have created over the years on the long path to education (sometimes with several obstacles along the way).
Despite the many disadvantages, we must also recognise an advantage provided by remote learning: following online lessons prepares us for university, where attendance is not always compulsory and for the ones who won’t find accommodation in the city of their choice, it will be easier to take part in online lessons, thanks to the already "assimilated" habit of taking notes in the best way possible.
With this method students are faced with a great possibility of personal growth, in fact if before lockdown they might have been forced to follow lessons because of the presence of the teacher, now it is up to them to choose to be responsible, to recognize what their duties are and to follow lessons out of choice and not obligation.
It is a test of maturity thanks to which students can form their character and the adult person they will become: this is the moment that will constitute the step which will lay the foundations for their adulthood.
Talking about the environment, the levels of pollution have drastically fallen thanks to the decrease in travelling: but we must consider that an increase in emissions due to the use of domestic heating is possible.
Some jobs now follow similar procedures to those of online teaching and relationships between client and worker suffer from lack of human contact.
The first advantage is the organization of time: workers can plan the time to devote to work and the time to devote to family needs.
The second one also concerns time, but in relation to travel restrictions. Especially people who live far from the workplace can see the change: travel stole time that is now (maybe) dedicated to the family.
Nevertheless, there is a risk, which is to spend long hours online and therefore ending up overworking and neglecting self-care or leisure time and hobbies.
The activities of certain sectors of the workforce are now taking place inside workers' homes; but what happens to the workers who keep going out for work such as electricians or plumbers?
They are subject to more changes, mainly negative.
One of them is limited movements: they cannot leave their province and they are strongly urged not to leave their municipality. The possibilities of work are reduced because clients are supposed to ask for help only in case of necessity.
Moreover most businesses are closed and for this reason not only have work opportunities been reduced, but also restocking is now difficult because if before the quarantine deliveries took place three times a week, now suppliers just come once.
In addition, living in the city or in the mountains becomes crucial in this situation: in towns and cities the population density is higher and this is beneficial to workers who can find both clients and necessary material.
In the mountains, the territory is larger and the population is lower so it is difficult to find work and suppliers: as a consequence travel becomes essential.
Despite the fact travelling has decreased, people who travel must constantly carry a document certifying the need for travel because law enforcement controls are very efficient.
In view of all the benefits and downsides of this model of work/school, what we should do is treasure the technological experience that this emergency situation is bringing us in order to make technology not an alternative but a choice.

Smart Working: come il Covid-19 ha influenzato le nostre vite. Considerazioni di una liceale.
Il 2020 sarà sempre ricordato per la crisi economica causata dal Covid-19 per il quale è stato necessario chiudere numerose attività, comprese le scuole.
Probabilmente i libri di storia non esamineranno l’argomento dello Smart Working dei lavoratori e degli studenti, ma chi è costretto ad utilizzarlo ora sa bene le difficoltà che ha portato.
Io posso parlare e spiegare la situazione dal punto di vista di una studentessa che frequenta l’ultimo anno della scuola superiore e deve misurare la sua conoscenza con l’esame di maturità.
Lo svantaggio peggiore è la distanza: eravamo soliti svolgere le lezioni faccia a faccia con i nostri insegnanti e avevamo l'opportunità di chiedere e ottenere una risposta in pochi secondi risparmiando così tempo (che a questo punto del percorso scolastico è essenziale), mentre durante le lezioni online l'audio spesso si blocca e la risposta deve essere ripetuta.
Un altro problema è avere i mezzi necessari: non tutti hanno un computer per seguire regolarmente tutte le lezioni o una connessione Wi-Fi abbastanza buona, ma quelli che ce l’hanno, possono partecipare anche se non sono in casa loro (per esempio se sono bloccati in un'altra abitazione e la quarantena non permette loro di tornare a casa).
La scuola digitale mette in discussione la scala di valutazione solitamente utilizzata dagli insegnanti perché temono che gli studenti cedano alla tentazione di imbrogliare e alcuni di loro ritengono opportuno mantenere una scala più bassa di valutazione a causa della sfiducia in questo sistema educativo. Questo è un dubbio che potrebbe sorgere a chiunque, ma compromette il rapporto che studenti e insegnanti hanno creato nel corso degli anni in un lungo percorso educativo (a volte con diversi ostacoli).
Nonostante i molti svantaggi, dobbiamo anche riconoscere un vantaggio fornito dal sistema digitale: seguire le lezioni online ci prepara per l'università, dove la frequenza non è sempre obbligatoria e per coloro che non trovano alloggio nella città da loro scelta, sarà più semplice prendere parte alle lezioni online, grazie all'abitudine già "assimilata" di prendere appunti nel miglior modo possibile.
Con questo metodo gli studenti si trovano di fronte ad una grande possibilità di crescita personale, infatti se prima potrebbero essere stati forzati a seguire le lezioni per la presenza del professore, ora spetta a loro scegliere di essere responsabili, riconoscere i propri doveri e seguire le lezioni per scelta e non per obbligo; è una prova di maturità con la quale gli studenti possono formare il proprio carattere e la persona adulta che diventeranno: questo è il momento che costituirà il passo che getterà le basi per la loro età adulta.
Parlando di ambiente, i livelli di inquinamento sono drasticamente diminuiti grazie alla riduzione dei viaggi: ma dobbiamo considerare che è possibile un aumento delle emissioni dovuto all'uso del riscaldamento domestico.
L'organizzazione del lavoro scolastico digitale è sfruttata anche in alcune professioni in cui il problema comunicativo si riflette a sua volta e le relazioni tra cliente e lavoratore soffrono della mancanza del contatto umano.
Il primo vantaggio è l'organizzazione del tempo: i lavoratori possono pianificare il tempo da dedicare al lavoro e il tempo da dedicare alle esigenze familiari.
La seconda riguarda sempre il tempo, ma è legata alla riduzione degli spostamenti. Soprattutto le persone che vivevano lontano dal luogo di lavoro possono notare il cambiamento: il viaggio rubava tempo che (forse) ora è dedicato alla famiglia.
Tuttavia, c'è un rischio, che è quello di trascorrere lunghe ore online e quindi non essere in grado di riconoscere il momento in cui dire stop al lavoro e dedicarsi a qualcosa di diverso come la cura personale, svago o hobby che sono stati trascurati
Le attività di alcuni settori della forza lavoro vengono quindi spostate nelle case dei lavoratori; ma cosa succede a chi continua ad uscire per lavoro come elettricisti o idraulici?
Questi lavoratori sono soggetti a ulteriori cambiamenti, principalmente negativi.
Uno di questi è la limitazione degli spostamenti: non possono lasciare la loro provincia e sono caldamente invitati a non lasciare il loro comune. Le possibilità di lavoro sono ridotte perché i clienti sono tenuti a chiedere aiuto solo in caso di necessità.
Inoltre la maggior parte delle aziende è chiusa e per questo non solo le opportunità di lavoro sono ridotte, ma anche il rifornimento ora è difficile perché se prima della quarantena le consegne avvenivano tre volte a settimana, ora i fornitori vengono solo una volta.
In più, vivere in città o in montagna è cruciale in questa situazione: nelle città la densità di popolazione è maggiore e questo è vantaggioso per i lavoratori che possono trovare sia clienti che materiale necessario.
In montagna, il territorio è più ampio e la popolazione è più bassa quindi è difficile trovare lavoro e fornitori, di conseguenza il potersi spostare diventa essenziale.
Nonostante il fatto che gli spostamenti siano diminuiti, le persone che viaggiano devono sempre portare un documento che certifica la necessità del viaggio perché i controlli delle forze dell'ordine sono molto efficienti lungo il percorso.
Alla luce di tutti i benefici e gli svantaggi di questo modello di lavoro/scuola, quello che dovremo fare è fare tesoro dell'esperienza tecnologica che questa situazione di emergenza ci sta portando per rendere la tecnologia non un'alternativa, ma una scelta.
