Green Cross
Hello everybody! We are Gaia Zanelli, Ginevra Fabbian, Mattia Lorusso and Linda Fattori: today we have decided to tell you about the Green Cross of Castelnovo ne’ Monti.
It is an essential organisation in our town and we’d like to let you know about the great job that the volunteers do every day. To begin with, we would like to say that we found out about Green Cross because since we were children they have come to our schools to teach students how to use a defibrillator or to simulate car crashes to show us how to behave in such situations. We found it very useful, in fact some of us also decided to attend the courses they organize every year.
Learning about all this has certainly given us more new skills and made us more confident and self-conscious about what to do during a first-aid situation. We have to say that in the beginning we were really scared of facing such incidents and we would have panicked immediately, but thanks to their help we have realized that by doing this we can always do something useful for people in danger. Sometimes it is really simple just like calling the emergency and stay close to the injured person!
Unfortunately, none of us has ever been able to volunteer, because we are quite busy with school, but they always tell us we’ll be more than welcome when we are ready to join.
Having said that, to know something more and inform you better we decided to go to the main office and interviewed the president, Jacopo Fiorentini, and some volunteers.
- When was the organisation established?
It was born in 1985 thanks to a group of ten people of good will, who decided to join together and help others.
At that time there were only the little hospital of Sant’Anna, which had been established many years before, and an ambulance, which was not very well equipped. So, these ten people decided to improve the services for the community by creating this organization. The only thing that we can say is that we are very proud of their initiative because without them we would not be sitting here.
- Has the number of the members changed over the years?
Yes, it has changed a lot. Now there are 349 members and 150 of them are present almost every day and we are very happy to have them in our team.
- Which kind of services can you provide?
We can provide two main services: secondary transport and emergency, which is the most frequent.
When there is an emergency we receive a call from 118 in Parma, which also gives us all the information about the accident, so that our team can get there as soon as possible with the ambulance and everything needed.
Secondary transport is a quite different matter: everything is planned directly with the person interested or a member of the family, so there is no emergency. We usually work with elderly or disabled people who need special means of transport to go to the hospital or reach other places.
- How many services do you provide in a year?
We provide around 21.000 annual services. We are able to carry them out thanks to 25 rescue vehicles we own: 6 ambulances and some minibuses and cars.
We can also rent a helicopter when needed.
- What are the main roles in the ambassador ance?
The ambulance team is composed of 2/3 members and each of them has a specific role: there is a professional driver, a team leader, (often the more experienced person), a stretcher-bearer, and occasionally there is a third member who is a beginner learning how to operate.
- Are you all volunteers?
No, we are not. Some of us are employed in management.
- How does it feel being a volunteer?
Being a volunteer has positive and negative aspects: it is very hard because you need time and dedication, but on the other hand it is very satisfying, above all during secondary transports because you get in touch with elderly people who are always grateful to you.
The situation changes when we talk about emergencies. In these, sometimes extreme, situations there is not enough time to be emotionally involved, you have to be concentrated on what you are doing, in order to be able to do your best for the person who needs help.
- What is the average age of the volunteers?
The average age is between 40-50 years old, but there are also many young people who are interested in joining us.
- Do teenagers like to volunteer also at weekends and holidays?
Yes, they do. For example on New Year’s Eve, we were all together to celebrate it, and most of us were teenagers. We had a lot of fun!
- How can people volunteer?
It is very simple to become a volunteer: every year we organize a training course, which everyone can attend.
To make this service work better, there are many roles with different tasks. For this reason, you can attend different training courses. The main classes are the ones dedicated to emergency and social services.
- Do you have any future plans?
Sure! We are going to build new headquarters near Centro Fiera. It will be a big building with offices for the management, rooms for classes, garages for our vehicles and a new nursing home.
With this little interview we hope we have helped you to learn about this organization because it is very important to us. It has been a beautiful experience; when we met them for this interview, they were really kind and helpful: we were even offered tea! Since they were so willing on this occasion, we firmly believe that all this kindness and friendliness is always there in whatever they do.

Ciao a tutti! Siamo Gaia Zanelli, Ginevra Fabbiani, Linda Fattori e Mattia Lorusso: oggi vi parleremo della Croce Verde di Castelnovo ne’ Monti.
E’ un’organizzazione fondamentale nel nostro paese e ci piacerebbe parlarvi del fantastico lavoro che svolgono i volontari ogni giorno.
Per iniziare vorremmo raccontarvi che abbiamo scoperto questa organizzazione perchè, fin da quando eravamo bambini, venivano nelle nostre scuole per insegnare agli studenti come usare il defibrillatore oppure per simulare degli incidenti stradali per mostrarci come comportarsi in questo tipo di situazioni.
L’abbiamo trovato molto utile, infatti alcuni di noi hanno deciso di frequentare i corsi annuali da loro proposti.
Imparare queste cose ci ha dato nuove conoscenze, ci ha reso più sicuri di noi stessi e consapevoli di cosa fare durante il primo soccorso.
Dobbiamo dire che all’inizio eravamo molto spaventati dal fatto di dover affrontare tali situazioni e sicuramente ci saremmo fatti prendere dal panico, però grazie al loro aiuto abbiamo capito che possiamo sempre fare qualcosa di utile per le persone in pericolo.
A volte è veramente semplice: si deve solo chiamare il 118 e stare vicino alla persona ferita!
Sfortunatamente nessuno di noi è mai riuscito a essere volontario, perché siamo piuttosto impegnati con la scuola, ma ci dicono sempre che saremo più che benvenuti nel momento in cui volessimo unirci a loro!
Detto questo, per conoscere qualcosa di più e informarvi meglio abbiamo deciso di andare alla sede centrale per intervistare il presidente Jacopo Fiorentini, e alcuni volontari.
- Quando è stata fondata l’organizzazione?
L’organizzazione è nata nel 1985 grazie ad un gruppo di 10 persone di buon animo, che decisero di unirsi e aiutare gli altri. All’inizio c’era solo il piccolo ospedale del Sant’Anna, che è stato fondato molti anni prima, e un’ambulanza poco equipaggiata. Così queste 10 persone decisero di migliorare i servizi per la comunità creando questa organizzazione. Possiamo dire che siamo molto orgogliosi di questa iniziativa in quanto senza di loro non saremmo qui.
- Nel corso degli anni il numero dei membri è cambiato?
Sì, è cambiato molto. Ora siamo 349 membri, di cui 150 sono presenti quasi tutti i giorni e siamo molto felici di averli con noi.
- Che tipo di servizi svolgete?
Svolgiamo principalmente 2 servizi: trasporti secondari ed emergenze, che è il più frequente.
Quando c’è un’emergenza riceviamo una chiamata dal 118 di Parma, che ci da tutte le informazione sull’incidente. In questo modo il nostro team può arrivare sul luogo il prima possibile con l’ambulanza e tutto l’occorrente.
I trasporti secondari sono una cosa differente: tutto è organizzato direttamente dalla persona interessata o un membro della famiglia, quindi non c’è nessuna urgenza.
Di solito lavoriamo con anziani o persone disabili che necessitano di mezzi di trasporto speciali per raggiungere l’ospedale o altri luoghi.
- Quanti servizi svolgete all’anno?
Svolgiamo circa 21.000 servizi all’anno grazie ad i 25 mezzi di soccorso che possediamo: 6 ambulanze, alcuni furgoncini e macchine. Abbiamo anche la possibilità di noleggiare un elicottero in caso di necessità.
- Quali sono i ruoli principali sull’ambulanza?
L’equipaggio dell’ambulanza è composto da 2 o 3 membri, ognuno dei quali ha un ruolo specifico: tra cui un autista, un team leader (solitamente è colui che ha più esperienza), un barelliere e a volte c’è un terzo membro che è un apprendista.
- Siete tutti volontari?
No, alcuni sono impiegati stipendiati in ufficio.
- Com’è essere un volontario?
Essere un volontario ha aspetti positivi e negativi: è molto difficile in quanto serve molto tempo ed impegno, ma allo stesso tempo è molto gratificante, in particolare durante i trasporti secondari perché si viene a contatto con persone anziane che ti sono sempre riconoscenti per il lavoro che svolgi.
La situazione cambia quando parliamo di emergenza. In questi casi, a volte estremi, non c’è tempo per essere coinvolti emotivamente, devi essere concentrato su quello che stai facendo in modo da poter fare il meglio per la persona che stai aiutando.
- Qual’è l’età media dei volontari?
L’età media è tra i 40 e i 50 anni, ma ci sono anche molti giovani interessati ad unirsi a noi.
- I giovani sono disponibili anche nel fine settimana e durante le vacanze?
Si, per esempio abbiamo festeggiato il capodanno insieme e la maggior parte di noi erano ragazzi. E’ stato divertentissimo!
- Come possono fare volontariato le persone?
Diventare volontario è molto semplice: ogni anno organizziamo un corso di formazione che tutti possono frequentare.
Per fare funzionare meglio questo servizio ci sono molti ruoli con compiti differenti, per questo motivo si possono frequentare diversi corsi.
Quelli più frequenti sono dedicati alle emergenze e ai servizi secondari.
- Avete qualche piano futuro?
Certo! Costruiremo una nuova sede vicino al Centro Fiera. Sarà un grosso edificio con uffici per l’organizzazione, classi per i corsi, garages per i nostri veicoli e una nuova casa di riposo.
Con questa piccola intervista speriamo di avervi insegnato qualcosa sull’organizzazione, in quanto è molto importante per noi.
E’ stata un’esperienza bellissima: quando li abbiamo incontrati per questa intervista sono stati molti carini e simpatici; ci hanno persino offerto un tè! Siccome sono stati così disponibili in questa occasione, crediamo fermamente che utilizzino tutta questa cordialità e disponibilità in qualsiasi cosa facciano.
