“Lesson number one” dei ragazzi del Cattaneo-Dall’Aglio: è Speakeasy

Speakeasy. Ciao! Benvenuti alla nostra prima lezione di inglese.

Iniziamo con il presentarci: siamo studenti delle classi quarte e quinte del Liceo Linguistico “Cattaneo-Dall’Aglio”.

Studiamo tre importanti lingue: inglese, tedesco e francese e oltre a migliorare la grammatica, stiamo anche scoprendo la storia e la letteratura di queste culture differenti. In aggiunta, i nostri viaggi in Inghilterra, Germania e Francia ci hanno aiutato a mettere a punto ciò che abbiamo studiato con i nostri professori.

Studiare tre diverse lingue straniere può sviluppare nuove aree del nostro cervello, migliorare la memoria e rafforzare la nostra attenzione. Lo studio delle lingue è una sorta di finestra aperta verso diverse culture. Infatti, esse permettono a ciascuno di comunicare con altre persone in tutto il mondo, rendono la mentalità più aperta, più creativa e aiutano a essere più sicuri di sé. Inoltre, studiare una lingua è strettamente connesso al parlare, che risulta essere la parte più difficile per la maggior parte delle persone. Sin dai primi giorni di scuola, sempre più abituati a questo, grazie all’incoraggiamento da parte dei nostri professori a esprimere la nostra opinione. Imparare a parlare una lingua ci aiuta anche ad essere al corrente della società che ci circonda e anche a sviluppare un senso di sensibilità critica. In questo modo non solo miglioriamo le nostre abilità, ma cresciamo anche come cittadini e adulti più coscienziosi. Avendo detto ciò, dopo aver studiato le lingue si è anche più socievoli e meno diffidenti da ciò che prima chiamavamo “diverso” e si è capaci di adattarsi meglio a ogni tipo di situazione.

Ora che abbiamo più confidenza con la lingua inglese, saremmo grati di condividere con voi ciò che abbiamo imparato in cinque anni di scuola, parlando direttamente con voi lettori riguardo a problematiche e questioni che consideriamo importanti; perciò non vediamo l’ora di collaborare con Redacon e Radionova e speriamo che divertirà anche voi.

Noi faremo del nostro meglio. La nostra scuola, il Liceo Linguistico, è il punto da cui tutto è partito. Questo è il nostro “quartier generale” e il posto in cui abbiamo sviluppato al meglio le nostre abilità, le quali alcuni di noi non avrebbero mai immaginato di riuscire a raggiungere.

Dato che sei qui, e stai leggendo quest’articolo sarai interessato a quale tipo di argomenti tratteremo; in realtà la risposta è tutto! Ci focalizzeremo su articoli riguardanti aspetti grammaticali della lingua, politica, questioni ambientali e qualsiasi cosa ci venga in mente. Il nostro intento è di insegnare un po’ d’inglese, una lingua parlata ovunque nel mondo, in modo che questi articoli siano una opportunità per imparare, sia per voi lettori che per noi studenti e scrittori.

Il nome che abbiamo scelto per la nostra rubrica è “Speakeasy”, un nome composto da “speak” e “easy” (parlare senza fatica) facendo riferimento al nostro obiettivo principale: aiutare i nostri lettori a familiarizzare con la lingua inglese.

In secondo luogo abbiamo pensato a un momento specifico nella storia americana, un famoso periodo chiamato “era del proibizionismo”. Gli Stati Uniti furono colpiti da un terribile divieto riguardo l’uso di alcol ritenuto pericoloso e anti-etico. I cittadini non avevano alcun modo di aggirare la situazione, se non incontrarsi in locali segreti, chiamati “Speakeasy”. Noi consideriamo la nostra rubrica una specie di caffè dove le idee circolano come le persone riguardo a quello che viene detto. Allo stesso tempo queste persone si parlano e si scambiano informazioni. Abbiamo creato il nostro spazio virtuale qui.

Se questa spiegazione vi sembra troppo colta, sappiate che la ragione per cui Alice ha proposto il nome è anche perché adora il suono di questa parola. “Speakeasy” beh, fantastico! Noi consideriamo i nostri lettori una parte fondamentale del nostro progetto: vi verranno perciò chieste opinioni e saremo ben disponibili ad accettare i vostri suggerimenti.

Crediamo che questo progetto potrà aiutarci in molti modi: a interagire con altre persone, a imparare qualcosa di più sul mondo del giornalismo e a mettere in pratica cosa abbiamo studiato fino ad ora.

Un altro soggetto importante del quale discuteremo è la bellezza del nostro patrimonio storico e naturale, per far sì che si sviluppi il turismo verso questi luoghi e che i visitatori provenienti da paesi esteri possano scoprire le nostre zone e la nostra storia nel miglior modo possibile. Uno degli scopi principali del nostro progetto è di promuovere e pubblicizzare le nostre montagne, un posto che c’è veramente caro e che spesso è sottovalutato. Siamo circondati dalla natura e dalla bellezza e raramente ce ne accorgiamo. Siamo nati qui, siamo cresciuti qui e vogliamo un futuro qui. È nostro dovere non rovinare quest’area e fare qualunque cosa possibile per mantenere Castelnovo ne’ Monti un bel posto in cui vivere.

Noi vogliamo veramente rendere tutte le persone consapevoli dell’immensa fortuna che ci è stata donata. Il turismo ha bisogno di essere incrementato e quale potrebbe essere il primo passo verso ciò? Forse avere una pagina del giornale locale in inglese. Questa potrebbe non essere una risposta o una soluzione immediata ma potrebbe essere comoda.

Crediamo che questo progetto potrà esservi utile per arricchirvi con qualche conoscenza generale e speriamo di incoraggiarvi a familiarizzare sempre più con questa lingua e allo stesso tempo di divertirvi. Siete pronti per partire? Come in handy è una delle tante espressioni idiomatiche della lingua inglese. “Handy” ha un paio di significati rilevanti ossia “conveniente di fare cose utili”. Qualcosa che può “come in handy” ha perciò questi attributi.

Hello! Welcome to our first English lesson.

Let’s start with introducing ourselves: we are students from the fourth and fifth classes of Liceo Linguistico ‘Cattaneo Dall’Aglio’.

We study three important languages: English, German and French. Besides improving the grammar, we are also discovering the history and literature of these different cultures. Moreover, our trips to each of these three countries have helped us to develop what we studied with our teachers.

Learning three different foreign languages can develop new areas of our brain, improve our memory and strengthen our ability for attentiveness. Languages are a sort of window to different cultures. In fact, they allow everyone to communicate with others from around the world, they make you more open-minded, and, finally, allow you to be more creative and self-confident. Moreover studying a language is closely connected to speaking, which is the hardest part for most people. Since the first days we get more and more used to it, thanks to the teachers’ encouragement to speak our minds. So learning to talk in a foreign language helps us to become aware of the society that surrounds us and also to develop a critical sensitivity. In this way not only do we improve our skills, but we also grow up as more conscientious citizens and adults. Having said that, after studying languages you are also more sociable and less wary of what we previously called “different”, and we can adapt better to any kind of situation.

Now that we have more confidence with the English language, we would be glad to share what we have learnt during 5 years of language school by talking directly to readers about issues we consider important, and we are looking forward to collaborating with Redacon and Radionova: we hope you'll enjoy it.

We'll try our best. Our High School, our Liceo Linguistico, is where everything started. This is our "headquarters" and the place where we have developed our skills, skills some of us never thought we would reach.

Since you are here and you are reading this article you'll be interested in what kind of topic we are going to discuss. Well, the answer is everything! We'll be focusing on grammar articles, on politics, on environmental issues and whatever comes to our minds. Our intention is to teach some English, a language which is spoken all over the world, so that these articles can be an occasion for learning both for you and for us.

The name we have chosen for our column is "Speakeasy" a name composed of "speak" and "easy" which brings out our main goal: helping our readers to approach the English language.

Secondly, we thought about a moment in American history called "prohibitionism". The USA was struck by a terrible ban on alcohol, which was considered dangerous and anti-ethical. People at the time had no chance but to meet in secret cafés called "Speakeasys". So we consider our column to be a kind of café where ideas circulate and people hanging around are curious about what we say. At the same time people discuss and exchange information. We have created our virtual space here.

Well, if this explanation sounds too highbrow, you might as well know the reason why Alice suggested it (and everybody agreed) is also because she simply adores the sound of the word... "Speakeasy" well, terrific! We consider our readers an important part of our project so you'll be asked for your opinions and we will be willing to accept your advice.

We believe that this project will help us in many ways: to interact with people, to get to know about journalism and to apply what we have studied.

Another important topic which we will discuss is the beauty of our natural and historical heritage in order to develop tourism and allow foreign visitors to discover our areas and history in the best way. One of the main goals of our project is to promote our mountains, a place really dear to us and often underestimated. We are surrounded by nature beauty and we barely notice it. We were born here, we are growing up here and we want a future here. It is our duty not to spoil this area and do whatever possible to keep Castelnovo ne’ Monti a good place to live in.

We truly want to make people aware of it and of the immense luck we have. Tourism needs to be improved, and what could be the first step towards it? Maybe having a local newspaper page in English. This may not be the immediate answer or solution, but it might come in handy.

We believe that this project can be helpful in providing you with some general knowledge, and we hope to encourage you to get more familiar with this language by having fun at the same time. Are you ready to start?
